(opening up this post for general viewing)
The stack of books on my bedside is kind of rediculously towering right now. This is a good thing! I stopped buying books for a while to save money, but working at a bookstore is too tempting. I try to only buy books that I know I will re-read multiple times, or that I are too obscure for the library. I hope this amuses you and/or inspires you to think about one of these authors.
1) The Terrible Privacy of Maxwell Sim by Jonathan Coe. (modern British satire, painfully true tragicomedy about internet friends and a quest to reconnect)
2) re-reading Feast For Crows by GRR Martin. Yeah, I meant to be re-reading Storm of Swords but would like to find a used hardback version of this. Too bad I didn't pick up the one I saw at Uncle Hugo's 2 years ago before the HBO series came out... oops.
3) Casket of Souls by Lynn Flewelling. Next to last in the Seregil and Alec series. The Tamir Trilogy is still her best work, but these stories are like rhubarb sauce on pound cake. Yummy, comfort food. She does gender exploration well without making a big dramatic deal about it.
4) Kingdom of Dust by Amanda Downum. 3rd book in her Necromancer Chronicles series. Well worth checking out. I've even seen this book at truckstops in Indianna -- because of the cover art I think. Intriguing main character.
5) Elsewhens by Melanie Rawn (lucky ARC find). Yeah yeah, have to dig up the first book at my local library to get to this 2nd book. TOR lists the publishing date as October 2012, Ms. Rawn says February 2013. More likely to be 2013. Also, holy crap! The Diviner is out as well. Go Melanie! Fantastic author photo as well.
6) Waking Giant - history book I'm 3/4 through about America after the War of 1812 and before the Civil War-- the Age of Jackson. All the history that your teachers skipped over. A LOT of craaaaazy religioius being started including Mormonism. Walt Wittman's poetry, the crazy utopian colonies, sensationalist writing, true crime, Edgar Allen Poe etc..
7) several New Yorkers 3/4 read
8) Popular Music in Vittula by a Mikkael Niemi -- northern Swedish town, comic scandanevian literature rec'd by co-worker
9) City of Dragons by Robin Hobb. Finally finishing up the story begun with Assasin's Apprentice. The writing is much less urgent, and more paced. 4 books could have been 2. But dammit, must. finish. the. story. of these. dragons. and elderlings.
10) The Curse of Chaillon and Paladin of Souls by Lois McMaster Bujold. One was a $4 hardback at the used bookstore. Finally getting around to reading this author that so many people have said READ HER BOOKS! Cordelia's Honor is on the list as well, figuring I should start her space opera books with this one? Confusing.
