4th of July and fireworks and too much good food and then lots of working and oh yeah, I got stuck in a wonderful book!

Sarah Monette is my favorite new author. I admit that I picked up her book, Mélusine, because the cover was attractive (clicky for gorgeous manRead more... )

HAHA! when I took a good look at the cover, all I could think was, DUDE they should've hired grrliz and this would have been an awesome book cover

I mean the tattoos are supposed to be bright green and red, but uhm... could these look more fake? Also, the lighting on the guy's body is all wrong.. it's night time indoor lighting and the setting is obviously daylight.

Ooooh, I quite liked that article! I even bookmarked it.

And I've added Melusine to my Amazon wishlist... now I just have to remember it so it doesn't get lost in the abyss of 450+ other things on the list!

yay

She seems like a sassy over-educated woman, with a lot of well-expressed deep thoughts. Her LJ is along the same lines sometimes.

However, her article on not doing fantasy like Tolkien make me grin, because there are always parts of any fantasy story that are obviously influenced by The Lord of the Rings storyline. Maybe without any elves...but a little Rivendell got thrown into her story.

Oh, you too, Hollis? I just finished Melusine two weeks ago, and I was absolutely thrilled with it. I haven't gotten around to ordering the next one yet, because the HP conference was this weekend, and my birthday too, so I've been insanely busy, but it will be the first book I'll go for once everything's quieted down a bit.

Thanks for pointing me in the direction of Flewelling, by the way. I've read all of them now and thoroughly enjoyed both series.

Oh wonderful! Alisel. :-D !!

I'm so glad that you are enjoying both of these authors. Ha! you have the best taste in books ;-)

I hope that the HP conference and your birthday are fun and enjoyable.

Monette's work has been recommended across my Flist, so I did pick it up in the bookstore just to be informed. (Not my cup of tea at all. I can still whip out my rant on why Jacqueline Carey's world-building is big-time faulty, from when I put down her first novel 5/8s into it.)

amphibiouswords read Mélusine and has a terrific post about how a certain type of fantasy world works and why Monette's work is unique and refreshing.

Ah, never mind then about the rec. I'm not a huge fan of Jacqueline Carey. There were some major flaws in Mélusine that I'm hoping will be polished up in The Virtu. I'll see.

thanks for the link! You are always so on top of the reading/book world.

I take recs and pass them on to others. I find reviews just as interesting sometimes as reading/viewing the source thingey.

*nods* In the off-time at work, I read the NY Times and LA Times Sunday book review pages. It's often just as revealing to read how books are perceived as to the actual content/quality of the book.
