Summary: It came as a disappointment and a surprise, though not a terrible shock when they lost to the new half formed Shishido-Ohtori pair. There was gold in the Shishido-Ohtori pair.
Gakuto lay staring at the ceiling of Yuushi’s room as the clock ticked away the minutes to 1 am. He had wheedled his way into an invitation to spend the night. He had never slept over at anyone’s before and he had never really wanted to. But he had poked and prodded until Yuushi had sighed the long-suffering sigh that meant he was giving into whatever outrageous demand Gakuto was making. The result was Gakuto lying in a spare futon in Yuushi’s immaculately neat room listening to the clock and the steady rise and fall of Yuushi’s breathe.
Yuushi’s house was not what Gakuto had expected. He had thought it would be like Atobe’s. A huge mansion filled with maids and gardeners but somehow still empty. After all, the Oshitari family was almost as wealthy. Yuushi’s home in actuality was a small apartment, a very nice small apartment in a very wealthy part of the city but a small apartment nonetheless. A small apartment he lived in all by himself. The cleanliness that looked nothing like the room of a teenage boy should belied the hired help that must come while Yuushi was at school.
Gakuto turned over to look at Yuushi, and silently cursed him for being able to sleep and for having a stupid ticking clock. He stood up quietly and tiptoed over to where their phones where charging next to Yuushi’s bed. Carefully flipping it open, he checked for any messages some how not surprised when the inbox was empty.
Yuushi’s hand on his arm made him jump. Blinking sleepily clearly only half awake, the tensai held up the covers and pulled Gakuto towards the empty space in his bed.
“Yuushi, what are you doing?”
“You woke up right? Bad dream? Used to get them, always slept with my sister after. Makes them go away. Come on. No more bad dreams tonight.” He gently guided Gakuto into the bed skooching back across the futon so they both fit and pulling him into a loose hug. Gakuto thought maybe this was the dream but well he was sort of uncomfortable that didn’t usually happen in dreams. Despite the oddness of the situation, telling Yuushi the truth or to just plain back off never crossed Gakuto’s mind as he felt his arm falling asleep between them.
When he checked his phone late the next morning there were still no messages.

“So what do you want to do?” Yuushi asked after they had stripped the futons and put them away.
Gakuto shrugged and flipped his phone open again no messages yet and it was nearing noon.
“Are you waiting for someone or something?” Yuushi asked and in response to Gakuto’s confused look, “You keep checking your phone. If you have to go meet someone or something you don’t have to stay here.”
“I’m not going to meet anyone.” Gakuto said bitterly. “Let’s go play tennis.” He said becoming excited as if it there was a switch he could use to turn it on.
“Sure, do you need to go home and get clothes or anything?” Yuushi asked gathering their tennis equipment, automatically taking Gakuto’s as well.
“No.” Gakuto grabbed his bag from Yuushi and stomped out the door. “Do you do anything on Sunday’s?” He asked as they hurried down the stairs.
“No, why?”
“I’m going to stay over tonight too.”
“Sure.”

The damn ticking clocks indicated that it was now one in the morning and Gakuto was still awake. Crawling out of bed he quietly made his way towards Yuushi’s futon. Moving past the phone he gently shook Yuushi’s shoulder. “Yuushi…Yuushi…” he whispered until Yuushi blinked up at him, “Can I sleep here again?” He asked. Yuushi did not answer just shifted over so there was room for Gakuto to slide in next to him.
