Title: C'e Chi veglia su di te
Rating: Pg
Genre: Gen
Characters: Gokudera
Pairing: none
Disclaimers: I own nothing not even the clothes on my back
Summary: Gokudera used to watch Disney movies.

A/N: Hayato Gokudera is pretty Japanese name for a kid who didn't know he was part Japanese until he was eight, so I've given a Italian name for those first eight years. The title is the Italian translation of the song mentioned in the text. I warn that I don't have a great handle on these characters yet, so forgive me Gokudera is probably too calm and Yamamoto isn't smiley enough.

C’e chi veglia su di te

The tape had been his sister’s originally, Matteo might have only been three but he was the only son of a powerful Mafioso and things like Disney movies were not appropriate gifts. Of course his father was rarely around to comment on what movies the young boy was watching, not that he would pay attention when he was around, and his mother didn’t care as long as his sister was happy. She was much older than him, almost six years, and had long outgrown the collection of Disney tapes. So Matteo watched it alone, over and over until the film was worn and fuzzy and he could recite all the lines and sing the songs. There was one song in particular that he loved. He would often rewind the tape to rewatch it. At night he would sing it his teddy bear like he heard the maid singing to her baby girl.

When he was eight and he learned what “mysterious pregnancy” meant and why he didn’t look like his parents the song became a mantra, a promise from the world to him, “someone’s waiting for you”. When he first ran away he would sing it to himself as he curled up under stoops out of the rain, reminding himself why he left.

The streets of Sicily are hard and with each rejection from the famiglia Matteo hardens more until he forgets about the childish movie and the song that was also a promise. He tosses aside his fathers name for good, embracing his mother’s tongue and follows a baby across the oceans. In Japan he is called Hayato Gokudera, it's his grandfather’s name, his real grandfather. Hayato Gokudera, the first, is long dead and Hayato wouldn’t look him up either way. Nothing good comes from family.

Japan is softer. He doesn’t need to worry about food or shelter, Reborn and the Vongola provide for him. He has always looked wrong so that doesn’t faze him. He beats up the few punks daring enough to comment on his looks. Japanese is not an easy language but Hayato remembers his piano teacher mother using it and the family doctor taught him a little when he was very young. It comes back quickly. And Tsuna is there and there is something magical in Tsuna, something that softens all the hard edges and sharps angles that Hayato had become.

He doesn't remember the song until by freak chance and horrible misfortune he is left to watch over Lambo for the night. The little freak spends about five hours destroying Hayato’s apartment before exhausting himself and curling up on the futon.

“Sing me a lullaby!” He demands.

“I’m not singing a fucking lullaby, go to sleep already, stupid cow.”

“SING! SING!”

“NO! SHUT UP AND GO TO SLEEP!”

SING!!!!” Lambo cries his eyes watering.

“FINE, fine just go to sleep.” Hayato sighs, and starts singing some sappy love song from one of his video games.

“No, in Italian.”

He pauses, it seems like ages since he’s even spoken the language, and he can barely remember the songs, until the melody comes back to him.

“Be brave little one, make wish for each sad little tear. Hold your head up though no one is near, someone’s waiting for you…”

Lambo is sleeping before he finishes the first verse.

Hayato isn’t really sure what compelled him to go to the music room. He hasn’t touched a piano since he was eight. The first few chords are hesitant and the rhythm is off, but as his fingers remember the movements the sound grows stronger and soon he is playing again. Why his fingers find the familiar movements to the silly little Disney song he doesn’t linger on. Why Yamamoto has to show up just then he doesn’t know.

“I know that song.”

Hayato raises his eyebrow, “So, it’s not like it’s anything special.”

“My mom bought me this movie when I was, I don’t know, 3 maybe,” Yamamoto continues anyways. “We used all watch it together. I haven’t heard that song since she died.”

Hayato isn’t sure what to say to that, so he says nothing. He stares down at his hands frozen over the keys.

“Anyways,” Yamamoto smiles, “I came to get you. The other’s are waiting by the gate.”

“Why? Just go home.” Hayato sighed turning back to the piano.

“But, we’re waiting for you.”

Be brave little one,
Make a with for each sad little tear
Hold your head up though no one is near
Someone’s waiting for you.

Don’t cry, little one
There’s a smile where a frown used to be
You’ll be part of the love that you see
Someone’s waiting for you.

Always keep a little prayer in your pocket
And you’re sure to see the light
Soon, there’ll be joy and happiness
And your little world will be bright

Have faith little one
‘Til your hopes and your wishes come true
You must try to be brave, little one
Someone’s waiting to love you
