this from a girl who doesn't particularly like Stravinsky...

What is it about the Firebird Suite that just makes everything better? It's so eternally optimistic. It's got the foofy light stuff, the really dark stuff (I adore pieces that make you jump), and yet the end is amazing. I think Disney got it right in Fantasia that the end is a piece that makes you soar--even if you're just sitting at your desk.

It always reminds me of Elaine, or Morgan, or whatever she's calling herself these days, and her first solo at Ponus. The rest of the finale was butchered by a bunch of middle schoolers who probably couldn't spell Stravinsky, and didn't care. But it's such an amazing piece, and that came through. I'm so freakin' proud of her. I'm lucky to have such a talented and wonderful sister. Not that we don't have our moments, but maybe because we're far apart enough in age, I've always been more amazed by her talent than jealous of it.

No matter what's going wrong in life, there's just something about this piece that makes it all okay. You cannot just listen to the finale though--that's cheating. You have to hear it all, all the ups and downs, to fully appreciate the emergence into light of the ending.
