We’re leaving for Vermont tomorrow after Alyssa finishes up with work. I’m working tomorrow too, but I’m going to try to head out a little bit early to help with the last minute packing chaos that I know will be going on.
I haven’t exactly been turning cartwheels with excitement about this trip, but now that it’s here, I’m looking forward to a few days away from work. We’re going because Alyssa is participating in the Adult Chamber Music Workshop at Kinhaven, the camp she went to as a teenager and has been going to as an adult for this program. Originally, she wasn’t going to go, but a little indecisiveness made the decision for her (in the way of her music assignments being set and sent to her before she could say she wouldn’t be attending). I did make it known that I would definitely NOT be staying at the camp like we have in the past. Last year’s accommodations at the camp left much to be desired. The room we stayed in was made of cement, sunk into a hillside and was unbelievably mildewed. Plus, it just looked sketchy. I’m not a priss, but I don’t enjoy respiratory infections on vacation, so I said we had to stay in a hotel this time. We found a reasonably priced hotel about 20 minutes from the camp and they take dogs, so Bea is coming along. After I resigned myself to the fact that we’d be going to Vermont for our vacation this summer, I thought we might just want to make a week of it, but I just couldn’t justify the expense of a week somewhere I didn’t really want to be. So, we’ll just be there for 4 days and that should be plenty.
Alyssa will be at camp for about 10 hours a day, so I’ll be pretty much on my own. I plan on taking a number of books to read, as well as lugging along the DVD player to watch movies in the hotel room. Of course I’m going to get out and explore as I usually do, but past trips to Vermont have taught me that planning for inclement weather is not a bad idea. I have experienced 2 Vermonts: Cold Rain Time and Black Fly Swarming Time. This year I will be bringing bug spray and a raincoat.
In my searches for things to do, I came across a website dedicated to finding and listing swimming holes all across the country. There just happens to be a large number of these swimming holes near where we’re staying, so it’s my hope to get out and explore a few of them while Alyssa’s at camp. The water will undoubtedly be too frigid to swim in for my warm blood, but I think I’ll be able to get some nice pictures and I’ll probably find a nice bank to plop down on my camping chair and read while swarmed by insects. I’m also looking for some easy walks in the woods that I can try with Bea. I can’t do anything too scary because I am kind of terrified of winding up like one of those people on I Shouldn’t Be Alive. It’s not that I’m afraid of the woods- I just have a very healthy respect for them. I accept my limitations when it comes to the outdoors and that’s not a bad thing.
Perhaps I will just sit in our hotel room watching DVDs, sleeping, and gorging myself on maple syrup and cheese. Now that’s a vacation!
