It's summer! This shouldn't be happening! And yet it is. A brief rundown on all the TV shows staring at me in the face at the moment, in the order they occur to me.
(
Game of Thrones, True Detective, Daredevil, Orange is the New Black, Sense8, Sleepy Hollow, Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, Orphan Black, Key & Peele )
[Spoiler (click to open)]That's pretty much exactly how I felt the whole time I was watching it. This season finally did me in, though. I had been getting HBO for free for most of the season as part of a cable company promotion, but it lapsed toward the end of May. I was going to pay the fee just to finish out the rest of the GoT season, but after the Sansa rape episode I decided against it. It's bad enough to have all that rape and violence against women (and as of the last episode, little girls for good measure!) to begin with, but the fact that it's really only in there for shock value and/or to further male characters' plotlines goes against everything I stand for when it comes to storytelling.
Do you suppose complaining to HBO or the showrunners would have any effect? Because if it did, I would certainly do that. But given that this is season five and the rape and violence is only getting more in-your-face, I'm thinking it's water under the bridge at this point. If anything, they probably love all the controversy, since it apparently only helps their ratings.
