What a fun weekend. Joe’s brother has been in town all weekend, and we spent time up near Lyons at the Waterfall Cabin, and it was great. Dave is pretty awesome- treated me like family from the start (hugged me when we first met). And he compliments Joe really well- it’s nice to see, because while I know I do too, it’s good to see someone do it who’s had some decades of practice. Or at least knowingly over the past few years. We all just had an easy time together, playing cribbage, climbing around on the rocks, cooking together on the campfire- just very easy. They went up to the cabin the night before with a friend of Joe’s and did a lot of hiking and climbing all together. Then they brought Trent home the next day and picked me up. I’d spent the evening before at book club, which is just me and Kenzie, as always. We talked about the book (Burned, by Ellen Hopkins) for our usual twelve minutes, and then we hung out, gabbed, and ate delicious food. We grilled up an array of awesome veggies, some peaches, and some home-made seitan (wheat-meat) that I made, and it was amazing. I really like Kenzie, and I like that we even like spending time together without book club as the reason. Some time we might get more members again, but we’re really okay with it being, for the most part, just the two of us.
I took today off of work because of Dave being in town, and it’s been great. I took a mid-afternoon recliner nap when we got home, and then tonight while the boys had more brother time, I went over to Laura and Tom’s house for Thai food and a movie. And also religious talk and sexual innuendos, because time at their house wouldn’t be complete without the latter!
Now I’m home and getting ready for a four-day work week, which feels pretty awesome. In a few weeks I’m headed up to Vail for the annual CCADV conference, and I’m super pumped about it- it’s always a good few days of amazing speakers, intense learning, good company, and relaxation (and maybe a tan). Plus, I nominated Wendy for an award, which she doesn’t know about, and she’s going to WIN IT, which she also for sure doesn’t know about. She deserves it, times ten.
She also asked me the other day about how I would feel about working four ten-hour days each week, instead of five eights. I told her I’d think about it, and I’ve been mulling it this weekend. Plus side would clearly be a three-day weekend each and every week. Down side would clearly be really long days, especially in the winter when I’m back on public transit- that would mean, probably, leaving at 9:30 in the morning, coming home at 9:30 at night (or 10:00 if the bus is late), winding down, going to bed, getting up and doing it again. I kind of feel like the week would just disappear, and I’d spend the whole weekend recuperating from the long days of the week. I wonder if it would be better to do three ten-hour days (say, Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday) and then a day off, and then one more day of work. Wouldn’t give me the long weekend, but it would give me a chance to break up the week a little bit, recover from long days, and maybe do some errands or something. I don’t know. It’s not like I have to decide immediately, and it doesn’t seem like it’s something she’s pushing me to do- just an option at this point.
