Half a rant

The bad thing about being on drugs is that you can't really get worked up, even if you feel the urge. There's just not enough energy.

So. Insert your own outrage here.

Apparently yesterday was a "Day of Silence" sponsored by certain groups in certain schools, in support of the safety of gay and lesbian students. (I don't understand the wording. Aren't lesbians gay as well?) Anybody who wanted to protest mistreatment and bullying of G&L students would keep silent all day, to symbolize that those students shouldn't be forced to keep silent about who they really are out of fear.

Personally I am all for students keeping silent more often, and I would support any protest that would further this goal, but that is neither here nor there.

The point is, Danae's school (which is a Christian school) signed up to participate in this Day of Silence. It was not in any way mandatory, the school just registered and I suppose they had some kids participating. I don't know, I didn't hear anything about it until today, when there was an article in the paper about it and the mother of one of Danae's friends left a message on our machine that she was upset that the school was involved in this. She wanted to go protest at the school and she wanted to know if we would back her up.

Well...no. I happen to have very strong thoughts on gay and lesbian and bisexual and whatever-else-that-involves-consenting-adults* people, and here they are:

NOBODY SHOULD BE MISTREATED OR BULLIED OR THREATENED OR HURT BECAUSE OF WHO THEY ARE.

I feel that a Christian school ought to take a stand against any kind of bullying and threatening. Nobody is saying that the school condones homosexual behavior; I'd be surprised if you could find a Christian charismatic-fundamentalist school in the South that does, or at least that would be willing to go on record as doing so. But all schools, and all Christians, should be willing to go on record as standing up against hatred and violence.

Now. Somebody please notify me when the G&L brigade starts protesting about the mistreatment of Christians. Then we can make jokes about strange bedfellows.

*I also have very strong thoughts about students not getting involved in any kind of sexual activity, because they are NOT consenting adults, but even before I hit the age of 18 I was aware of what type of person I was attracted to, and I assume the kids of today have at least that basic knowledge as well.
