Rude Awakening

BANG! BANG! BANG!

BANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANG!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, y'all...didn't mean to wake you up so early on a weekend. It's not me, really. It's these overly enthusiastic roofers that have decided that our house really, really, really needs to be reshingled RIGHT NOW, at 6:30 AM on Saturday morning. So now I am awake, and my kids are awake, so you might as well be awake too.

I guess I should be happy they're here at all. Only seven months after Katrina! It took us two months to even get an inspector to come by and look at the roof, because it was not actually leaking into the living room at that time (although by now we have sustained some damage) and they were prioritizing for the really serious cases; and they warned us then that getting any crews would be difficult to impossible. We're also extremely blessed that they're working for 43 dollars a square, which is close to the pre-Katrina rates, because going rates around here right now are anywhere from 80-100 dollars a square. One guy was quoted 120 dollars a square, and he took it, because it was the only crew that he could get ahold of that would even book him; most of them are too backed up already. That's also pretty close to what the insurance money covered. If we'd had to, we could have re-negotiated with the insurance, but it's nice not to have to deal with that (SO FAR) and have more delays.

These guys come well-recommended, and they just finished a friend's house, and it looks really well-done to me, but what do I know about roofs? There seems to be only one among them who speaks English, and I don't speak Spanish, so we have a communications barrier. Well, I speak a few words of Spanish from reading Delenn's Dora book to her EVERY SINGLE NIGHT. And it bothers me to no end, as it is about a little owl who wants to go to sleep, and Dora and Boots and Diego are looking for her a quiet place to sleep, and every other page they sing a different little song to the tune of "Frere Jacques", and at the end of the book they sing to the owl so she can fall asleep, to the tune of "Frere Jacques", a song which is about WAKING PEOPLE UP.

Which, come to think of it, is a concept that the construction crew can really relate to.
