I almost forgot the @snarktheater challenge! Then again, it is the third day in a row where I don’t write anything. Between the news and my personal issues I’ve kind of been too busy for it tbh.
Does your story deal with themes of race or racism? Or does it feature a racially diverse cast without discussing race in detail?
Yes and no. The story explicitely talks about and deals with magical racism, since they’re a pretty strong part of the worldbuilding and what later drives a real drift between Clary and Valentine.
Human diversity doesn’t get as much attention, mainly because that would be a topic for a different story and also because I don’t think I have it in me to handle so many crossing situations all at once. Better do a little thing decently well than a sloppy big thing.
That being said, one thing I really want to do is include at least one conversation about the differences between magical racism and real world racism. As in, I’m not going to discuss the latter in detail, but I have several characters of colors who, while being supernatural creatures, interact with the mundane world (the Lightwoods, Luke, Maia, Aline, etc.) and do have to deal with discrimination there as well.
It’s important for me to point out that the things they face as supernatural creatures doesn’t negate what they face as members of human society. Hence, at least a couple mentions of that fact.
