I still recall my first day with ----. Accustomed to stark lecture halls and the sterile settings of laboratories, I felt out of place surrounded by the antique leather and mahogany of the boardroom. Beaming proudly at the new hires, the VP of healthcare revenue cycle wrapped up her story with “...and that’s how we save babies”. She was referring to a hospital we worked with several years ago. The project was such a runaway success that the client was finally able to fund the construction of a neonatal intensive care unit. After that engagement, the phrase “we save babies” became the de facto company mantra. I couldn’t help but smile in anticipation of my first hospital assignment. With my head full of lofty ideals, I couldn’t wait to start saving babies.

Not quite how it happened...

Accustomed to stark lecture halls and the sterile settings of laboratories, I felt out of place among these business and finance majors. I fidgeted in my chair, unused to feigning interest for such a long period of time. It was the last day of training; the end of a grueling month-long crash course in hospital administration and the healthcare industry. My mind wandered to the upcoming week, when I would be meeting my project team for the first time.

The end of the presentation snapped me out of my reverie. “...and that’s how we save babies,” concluded the trainer, beaming proudly at us new hires. She was referring, of course, to a hospital we worked with several years ago. The project was such a runaway success that the client was finally able to fund the construction of a neonatal intensive care unit. After that engagement, the phrase “we save babies” became the de facto company mantra. I couldn’t help but snicker. Who do they think they're fooling?
