The thank-you card I will never send:
Dear John,
Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to lead the supervision training course last week. Not only was it immensely helpful, but it impacted me in a very profound way.
Unlike most of my colleagues, I never cared for the CEO's annual keynote address or the speeches given by the Owners. I never believed we saved babies, and I was never moved by the Heart of Stockamp. However there have been two instances during my Stockamp career where I have truly and passionately believed in the work that we do. The first time was when our then Senior Manager said goodbye to the team. I realized how much I've grown up since graduation and how much this was influenced by the incredible people I work with.
The second instance was last week, during training. Your candor and humor made you approachable (a rare quality, for Directors). At the same time, your professionalism inspired me to be a better businesswoman. And for the first time since I joined the company, I could see a future here. I could've been happy here, if I had a mentor like you.
It saddens me then, to inform you that moments before I stepped on that plane to Chicago, I tendered my resignation. Unfortunately my personal situation will not permit me to travel this summer, and I could not work out an agreement with HR for an LOA.
I don't know where I will be going from here. But wherever I end up, know that I will strive to act with the same integrity and professionalism I saw in you.
Respectfully yours,
Katie
