Alicia stood on the mountainside, looking at the burgeoning colony spread out beneath her. It was growing exponentially within the confines of the newly-completed gate; buildings were freshly finished on a regular basis and new ones started the very next day. She should be over the moon, instead of silently fuming.
Taylor stood beside her, detailing one of his many grand plans while she pretended to listen, as she had done for most of the day. This was supposed to be a bonding exercise for them, a chance to regain their closeness after the events of recent months, but instead every word from his mouth had irritated and, alarmingly, sounded less and less like him as the hours passed.
It had been a month since he had banished Lucas. A month since their first time together. And since then they'd barely spent more than an hour in each other's presence. The lack of contact was hardly her decision - Taylor shut himself away for hours on end with her knowing better than to interrupt - but she couldn't help but wish now that she had forced, she had pushed, and she had stopped him losing himself.
Every idea he had told her about during their trek was reckless, careless - so unlike him. He was planning a hundred things that the brass would never okay, would never even propose - not until they were significantly more settled. If his ideas had merit, she would have been behind him one hundred percent. But they didn't. They only worried her.
He finished up his speech and started towards the route they would take back down, only noticing at the last moment that she hadn't done the same. They really should be going - the sky above them increasingly grey, the air around them increasingly close and humid. Getting back to the colony quickly would be a good plan. But she could not make her feet move to follow him.
"Wash? You coming?"
"No, sir." She said, not looking at him.
He passed into Commander mode too quickly these days and quickly enough his eyes on her were cold. "Why not, lieutenant?"
"With all due respect, sir, I think you'd be better off on your own."
"Respect? Bullshit." He said, moving back to her. "What the hell's wrong with you?"
She turned to him now, eyes blazing with anger. "Me? What the hell's wrong with you Nathaniel?"
His face melted into a confused scowl at her use of his given name. "I have no idea what you're talking about."
"No." She said. "No, you don't. That's the problem."
"Explain, lieutenant." He said coolly. She opened her mouth so say something and he waved a dismissive hand. "Permission to speak freely granted."
"Ever since Lucas was banished, you've become less and less like the man I know, the man I've come to trust." She said. "Everything you've suggested today has been irrational, bordering on thoughtless but you've shut me out so completely that I don't feel I can tell you otherwise."
A raindrop fell on her nose after she'd finished speaking but she ignored it in favour of watching his face, seeing the warring emotions play out as he tried to accept the truth of her words, yet his ego attempted to rail against such criticism.
"I've been busy." He said, with such conviction that she wasn't even particularly surprised.
"Busy." She repeated, unimpressed. "Busy with what, exactly? Coming up with these ridiculous plans and not letting me and Guz do a damn thing to help? Busy feeling sorry for yourself?"
"Busy dealing with the fact that I sent my son into the jungle to die!" He shouted.
Somehow she managed to stand firm in the face of his anger and self-pity, didn't flinch away from him (that would have only made the situation worse).
"You did what you had to do for the security of the colony." She said calmly, trying to keep emotion from her voice. It was a justification she'd used multiple times since the banishment, both to him and to herself in her darker moments. "Do you even remember what else happened that night?"
He winced, smoothing his hand through his wet hair. "Of course I do."
The rain started to fall with increasing speed as she looked imploring up at him. "Then speak to me. Let me help."
There was a moment, the shortest of times, where Alicia thought she had succeeded in getting thorough to him. But then he swiped an angry hand over his face to clear it of moisture and he started to turn from her. "Nothing to talk about, Wash."
It was instinct to act as she did in that moment, dropping her sonic rifle to the side and curling her hands over his shoulders before he could move away, bringing their mouths together in a hungry, messy kiss that overflowed with rage and despair.
Eventually she forced herself back, angry at the impulse to give in and the weakness of character that showed. She stalked from him towards the cliff wall, leant up against its wet support and folded her arm over her stomach, one coming up to cover her mouth.
"Wash..." He started, trailing off when she shook her head, looking away from him.
Alicia could practically hear Ayani screaming at her now, telling her (and Nathaniel) to stop being so damn stupid. But that didn't help her know how to fix the mess that was their relationship, how to go back to the ease between them that came in the night's sleep they shared in her bed... even just back to their friendship, if that was what was necessary. She just wanted to be close to him again.
"I'm sorry." He said quietly.
"Don't apologise." She scoffed. "I don't think you know what you're supposed to be sorry for."
"Then tell me." He said, moving closer. He had to raise his voice over the noise of water pounding all around them, had to be near her to be heard. "Tell me!"
"You've never shut me out before." She said, both arms now folded protectively over her stomach. This man made her vulnerable in a way she hadn't experienced before, wasn't entirely fond of. "Don't start now."
It was his turn to act impulsively and kiss her now, pinning her to the rock face with his considerable weight. He rested his forearms either side of her head, moved his mouth over hers with sureness and lust, needing her, devouring her. She moaned into the contact of their lips, let her arms encircle his upper body and hold him to her as rain water sluiced down their clothed forms.
"Help me." He muttered against her lips, so quiet she almost couldn't make out the words.
She pressed her forehead to his shoulder to catch her breath. "Let me in, Nathaniel. We can do this together."
"Don't know if I can do it at all." He admitted.
"But you won't give up without a fight." She said, clasping his face between her hands. "I know that."
He nodded, kissing her again. When he went to pull away she hooked her leg over his hip, pulling him so that he fit perfectly against the full length of her. She gasped at the feel of sodden material hiding his boy from her, covering his half-hard length as it fit along her core. The gasp turning into a moan when he started to rock against her and the pressure turned into a more familiar one, something she had dreamt about countless time since the fateful night.
"Not here..." He murmured, lips tracing the curve of her jaw, the path to her ear. His words didn't mesh with his actions though as he forced her more firmly into the rock.
"Here." She countered, her hands tugging up the back of his t-shirt. Her wet palms caught on his damp skin. "Let go."
With a feral growl he took her mouth once more, soft hands turning hard, lips turning to teeth and lingering rage.
He left her jacket on, but pulled her tank free of her fatigues, pushing it up, ever upwards until it was bunched under her arms. His lips never left hers as he unfastened the clasp at the front of her bra, let the material hang free so that the cool rain impacted with her skin. She let out a cry into his mouth when he pinched her nipples, wet fingers making a strange friction with her aching peaks.
She moved a hand between their bodies to curl over his erection, starting to smooth her palm up and down until he groaned into her mouth and gave himself over to rocking into her touch. But he didn't abandon his task, in some way appearing to want to make up for leaving her unsatisfied their previous time together. He pulled his lips away and ducked his head to kiss over the curve of each breast, making achingly slow circles in towards her nipples.
The heat of his mouth enclosing her right peak was striking, a huge difference to the coolness of the rain and the humidity of the air. She arched into his touch, needing more and wanting to take it. She combed her fingers through his wet hair, nails gripping ever firmer as he tended her breasts, able to pick up the faint sound of him humming with pleasure at the taste of her.
Her palm stilled against him when he braced one arm back beside her head and then his hand was between her legs, strong fingers stroking over her clothed core. Her head impacted with the rock when he hurriedly opened her zipper and slid his hand inside the material, seeking out her wet heat.
Their position didn't allow him further than circling and pinching her clit but it was enough to make her pant and curse, writhing against his ministrations. He lifted his head and grinned wickedly at her, before tucking his forehead in the curve of her neck so she could feel his breath on her slick skin.
She bit down hard on the side of his neck when he caught her bundle of nerves in a particularly harsh manner and he hissed before doing the same on her shoulder. She couldn't stop a long, rumbling moan at the sensation.
A few more strokes of her clit and she broke with rough shout to the thundering heavens, her muscles clamping down harder than she had managed by her own hand for a long while. She felt his lips curve against her neck and refused to let him have a win, recovering to squeeze the hand still covering his length until the lips parted to allow ragged breaths in.
She undid his belt and zipper with haste, all the while her body pulsing with glorious release, and laughed triumphantly when she found her target, his smooth hardness having been too long from her touch.
Her palm moved slowly up and down, gathering the liquid from the tip to ease its path. She twisted and squeezed according to his grunts and groans, feeling him bare his teeth when her fingers teased his balls.
It didn't take him long to reach the edge above her, his breathing deep as his hips thrust a searching pattern into her grip.
"Wash, stop..." He groaned, hips thrusting helplessly into the firmness of her grip. "Alicia, dammit..."
Understanding his concern, Alicia dropped to her knees and didn't hesitate in taking the head of his erection in her mouth, palm still working on the rest of him. She applied a light suction and looked up to see him gazing down at her in adoration, before his eyes screwed shut and he forced his chin up. He rocked into her mouth with unabashed fervour, finally exploding on her tongue when she moaned her pleasure at his desire for release. His groan of completion was audible above the pounding water, the ragged noise enough to make her pulse anew with warmth and desire.
Nathaniel hauled her to her feet with hands under her arms and together they fell into the support of the rock to catch their breath, Alicia smoothing a calming hand over his back as he palmed her hips restlessly. Eventually he sought out her mouth, kissing her with a sweetness that had previously been missing, and not especially needed at the time. But now, now it was welcome, a balm to soothe the ache in her soul.
"Let's go home." She whispered as the rain died down, fighting the urge to smile at how ridiculous they must look all wet and dishevelled.
Nathaniel noticed the sparkle of amusement in her dark eyes and grinned, looking down at their forms. "Might argue that we don't go quite yet... agreed?"
Starting to refasten her clothing, Alicia gave in to the smile. "Agreed."
