Nathaniel Taylor was getting restless.
It had almost been a week since the Phoenix Group had taken over Terra Nova, since Wash had had to surrender.
He still couldn´t believe that the last thing he had said to her was that if anything would happen to the colony it would come out of her paycheck, he hadn´t even considered the possibility that that might be the last time he´d ever talk to her.
She had told him once again that she wanted to come with him and he had brushed her off with some silly joke about needing her safe and sound to stitch him up when he would come back.
Running his hand through his hair, the Commander sighed deeply, remembering the night before that morning, how his Lieutenant had spend hours pleading for him to take her with him, she had tried to reason with him, she had yelled and when it hadn´t helped she had started to cry, clinging to him desperately as she begged him to change his mind.
He had told her no, said that he wouldn´t entrust Terra Nova to anyone but her while secretly thinking that he would take out the enemy as soon as they stepped through the portal, miles and miles away from the woman he loved, his own arrogance once again getting the better of him and it had cost them so dearly.
Now she was being used as a tool to keep him from attacking the colony, being held hostage by his son who knew exactly what it did to Taylor to be unable to help her, it was slowly driving him insane.
"Sir, we´re ready."
Mark Reynolds voice interrupted Nathaniel´s thoughts, the young man looking at him with a strangely soft expression on his face.
"Anything amiss, Corporal?"
"No, Sir, it´s just- she´s tough, she´ll be ok."
Not knowing what to say Taylor briefly put his hand on the younger man´s shoulder, then glanced at his watch.
"Five minutes, get to your post."
"Yes, Sir."
Taylor began to walk along his line of soldiers who were posted strategically in the undergrowth along the path, their routine at taking out the enemy´s convoys was working like a charm now, everyone knowing precisely what to do.
The last person he reached was Reilly who was looking tense but more than ready for the fight ahead.
"Holding up all right, Sargent?"
"Yes, Sir."
"Good- two minutes."
He was halfway back on his way to Reynolds when he heard the distant roar of engines making their way towards them and at the same moment, his comm link began to crackle in his pocket.
Cursing the untimely interruption, Taylor pulled it out, puzzled when he couldn´t identify the caller.
"Taylor."
"Thank God!"
"Tom?"
"They put her on the bike-"
The comm until fell to the ground and Nathaniel was running, no room for anything but the determination to get back to Reynolds before it would be too late.
He watched as though in slow motion as the tree fell across the path, the convoy stopping, he was barreling straight into Mark Reynolds, knocking his rifle aside, he didn´t pay attention to the fight around him as he jumped onto the path and pulled Wash off her bike and onto the ground, shielding her body with his.
He could feel her pulse against his lips as he buried his head against her neck, his fingers fumbling with the clasp on her helmet before he finally managed to pull it off, her long dark hair tumbling out.
"Are you all right?"
He asked her urgently, feeling overwhelmed with relief when she nodded.
The sound of gunfire around them ceased and he looked up, seeing Mark staring at them, his expression horrified as he realized who had been his destined target.
Taylor pulled Wash up with him, his arms closing tightly around her back as she hid her face against his shoulder.
"I´m so sorry" she whispered brokenly and he could feel her tremble as she started to cry for the second time that week.
Alarmed the commander began to stroke her hair, trying to soothe her, he wasn't used to her being insecure, she was usually too proud to let her emotions show so easily.
"There´s nothing to be sorry for, Wash."
"I got twenty six people killed, I had to surrender, I failed you-" he interrupted her by pulling her face up to look at him.
"Listen to me, it´s me who should be sorry, I left you there, I didn´t even consider something like this might happen, I thought I had it all under control and my big ego almost got you killed."
He bend his head and kissed her softly, not caring who saw them, things would be different from now on, he was done hiding his feelings for her from the rest of the colony.
She relaxed against him and began kissing him back, arms wrapping around his neck as she pulled herself impossibly closer.
They broke apart again and Taylor gently transferred Wash to Mark Reynold´s arms instead, the young man looked as though he was short of fainting and could do with a hug and the commander needed to take a look at the convoy.
