Spoilers: General
Time- line: Pre- series.

He´s not exactly impressed with his new recruit and for a moment he entertains the idea that his superiors have conspired and are making fun of him.
The young woman, no, girl, she´s only seventeen and calling her a woman doesn´t seem to fit at all, isn´t at all what he pictures when he thinks of an able soldier, she´s too slight, too slim and- and that irritates Taylor even more than her other short comings- she´s beautiful.
Not merely pretty like young girls often are but actually beautiful in a striking, sensual way with large expressive eyes and a delicately shaped nose and pouty lips and perfect skin and where she´s seems too dainty to survive out in the field, she´d have a perfect figure to model evening gowns or jeans or underwear- Taylor dismissed that thought as quickly as it comes to him but his momentarily lapse of control, even though it´s only in his thoughts, annoys him and it´s all her fault.
She´s standing at attention in front of him, stance perfect, he has to admit that, albeit grudgingly and if she´s wondering what he´s thinking about, her expression doesn´t give away anything, it´s completely blank, unreadable, even for Taylor and for the first time since she walked into his office, he wonders if this might not be a joke after all.
He looks down at her resume again, his eyes narrowing as they linger on a line before he looks up at her again.
"You´ve completed sniper training?"
"Yes, Sir."
Her voice comes at a surprise, it´s deeper than he would have expected, warm and melodic and somehow makes Taylor think of honey and velvet and he quickly concentrates on the task at hand.
"Let me be frank with you, I can´t picture you surviving out there for longer than a few minutes and I don´t like dragging cannon fodder along."
For a brief moment her face changes, the blank expression lost and suddenly there´s fire in her eyes and her jaw tightens, lips thinning and now she reminds Taylor of a bristling lioness and he instinctively takes a step back, only to instantly reprimands himself, this is ridiculous, she´s not a force to be reckoned with, just a girl who looks a bit too good in her uniform.
When she replies she´s back in control but that dangerous glittering is still present in those dark eyes.
"If you say so, Sir."
That gets his attention, his unit is an elite one and usually soldiers line up to be considered to join him in the field but Alicia Washington- even the name is ridiculous, if and only if he should actually consider her for his team he has to do something about it- doesn´t seem overly concerned about his rejection.
"Aren´t you going to argue?"
He asks, despite himself, for some reason she is getting to him, he finds himself amused by her, not yet impressed but the way she is still standing there with her perfect attention stance and completely in control deserves to be noted and approved of.
She gives a half shrug.
"Permission to speak freely, Sir?"
For a moment he wonders if it wouldn´t be safer to tell her no but his curiosity gets the better of him and he leans back against his desk, crossing his arms and nods.
"Granted."
"I´ve been told you are looking for a medic and I`m the best you can get, if you don't want me because I´m too young or a woman or not what you expected than it´s your loss, not mine."
The whole line is delivered without so much as a blink of an eye, void of emotion and for a moment Taylor is speechless, then he can´t help himself, he laughs.
"Well, I suppose I gave you permission to speak freely, tell you what, Wash, why don´t we go to the range and you can prove me wrong?"
She ignores his way of address and nods briskly, stepping back to let him exit the office first.
He leads the way through the corridors, not surprised anymore when she follows him in silence, she obviously isn´t one for mindless chatter and that at least is something Taylor appreciates.
They arrive at the range and Taylor wordlessly hands the girl a a rifle and watches as she lifts it and takes aim.
Her stance is, once again, flawless and by now Taylor already has resigned himself to the fact that she might prove him wrong but when she begins to take out target after target with a precision Taylor can´t remember having seen in all his years in the service, he can´t help but stare at her, feeling slightly put out.
She lowers the rifle without so much as a glance at him, she doesn´t gloat, doesn´t even look overly pleased with herself. and Taylor understands that this result is normal for her, nothing to get excited about, just business as usual.
Taylor runs a hand through his hair, he hates to be wrong but it can´t be helped, he has to apologize to her- or at least acknowledge her skills.
"That was- impressive."
She shrugs again and there´s a tiny hint of a smirk on her face when she turns to him.
"If you say so, Sir."
He has to bite his lip to keep himself from smiling, she´s amazingly confident for her age and lack of experience, almost cocky but he likes it, confidence is the most important trait in a soldier, especially once applying for a position like the one he has to offer, he can´t deal with insecurity or fear out in the field.
He looks her upside down, trying to evaluate the amount muscle mass underneath that silky olive skin.
"You any good at sparring?"
He asks, trying to sound dismissive but it´s getting harder not to let her notice that his view on her is changing rapidly.
"Yes, Sir."
An hour ago Taylor would have thought her arrogant, now he isn´t so sure anymore and he finds himself looking forward to testing her statement.
"All right then, let´s go."
Unsurprisingly she looks even better in her workout clothes but once they´ve started sparring, Taylor can´t focus on that anymore, he needs all his concentration to prevent being beaten, small as she may be compared to him, the girl is perfectly balanced and incredibly skilled and his weight isn´t of much advantage, making him less able to turn and twist with the same speed she does.
He gets her onto the mat eventually but not before she has him covered in sweat and panting severely, he can´t remember when he had to work this hard to succeed.
He helps her up, watching as she pulls her hair tie out and dark, glossy strands tumble down her back, the momentary transformation from soldier back to the far too pretty girl fascinating, only now Taylor knows that the overly female creature he has imagined her to be is nothing but an illusion, she´s a soldier through and through and he hopes he hasn´t acted too shabby towards her and that she´ll take him up on the offer he is about to issue.
He looks after her as she walks towards the woman´s shower room, for a moment his thoughts stray again and he groans quietly, this is going to be tough but judging by what he has seen from her so far, it´ll be worth it.
When he offers and she accepts without even calling him upon his less than professional attitude towards her, Taylor can´t help but admire his future field medic.
