Seeing Taylor´s dark side in episode 8 made me wonder about how much his second in command knew about his actions- one scene that especially interested me in retrospect was from episode 5 when Taylor talks about his code of honor and there seems to be a silent conversation going on between him and Wash who doesn´t look very convinced to me...
Anyway, this is a short one shot about Jim confronting Wash after finding out about Philbrick.
"Lieutenant Washington."
She had known this moment would come and now it had she almost felt relieved, waiting for it had been a hundred times worse than anything that might happen now.
"Shannon- what do I owe the pleasure?"
There was no trace of their usual casual banter in either voice, right now they weren´t friends, weren´t colleagues, right now he was the cop, looking for answers and she was nothing but a suspect.
The look on his face was calculating, his eyes were cold, his posture demanding but it would take a lot more to get a response out of her.
"I think you know."
She got up from her chair slowly and stepped around the desk, arms crossed over her chest as she stood facing him, their eyes locked in a battle of wills, a battle that was lost from the beginning, no matter how good a cop he might be, he still had nothing on Lieutenant Alicia Washington.
"I have no idea what you´re talking about" she told him, ice in her voice, the model soldier through and through.
"Come on, Wash" his facade was already cracking, he was pleading with her now, pleading to tell him something that might help to uphold his image of her, that might save her untarnished reputation.
She was almost sorry that she couldn´t do anything to reassure him.
He waited for a moment, then sighed and closed the door behind himself.
"Look, I´m sorry but I really need some answers."
"You´re wasting your time" she informed him, "I don´t know anything."
"You said you didn´t know what I was talking about."
He reminded her and she easily read him, he was good at his game and he knew it but he had no idea who he was dealing with and it was time to remind him.
"Whatever you ask, Shannon, I won´t know anything about it."
Her poker face firmly in place she watched him sag, giving himself away far too easily, his disappointment, his frustration, too easy to manipulate, too easy to play and Alicia Washington had learned from the best.
"Did Taylor forbid you to talk to me?"
He asked, sounding suspicious as she looked back at him, posture and face utterly relaxed.
"Talk about what, Shannon?"
"Damn it, Wash, why are you doing this, he´s not the good guy he makes himself out to be, he´s-" one look at her face made him falter and he ran his hand through his hair in frustration before giving her a sad smile.
"But then you already know that and apparently, you don´t care."
"I have work to do, Shannon, so if that´s all, please excuse me."
"This isn´t over, I still want to know" he protested, then his eyes widened when Wash gripped the hem of her top and pulled it up and over her head, shaking out her black hair.
"On my first mission with Taylor, we got ambushed and I was captured with two comrades, I was the first they tortured for information, figuring that as a woman I´d break earlier. They cut across my ribs with a knife, just deep enough so it wouldn´t kill me, they kept reopening it, putting salt into the wound, watching it get infected, watching as I burned with fever.
When Taylor found us, I was almost dead, he wasn´t pleased, none of them survived."
"Did you tell them anything?"
Shannon asked, his eyes raking over the prominent scar.
"I didn´t- the one on the other side, it´s a burn, effective but painful, breaks most people rather quickly- the one below, gun shot wounds, bastards didn´t make sure I was really dead though- my back is a nice study, too, if you´re interested in what whip lashes do to one´s skin."
She reached for her discarded top and pulled it back on while Shannon watched her, his jaw set.
"I get it, there´s nothing I could do to you to make you talk."
"I knew we understood each other- now go and do what you have to do and stop bothering me, I don´t have time for this."
Shannon passed Taylor on his way out, avoiding the commander´s gaze and Wash stood to attention as her CO closed the door.
"You´re holding up all right, Wash?"
"Yes, Sir."
No other words were needed, she understood that he was asking her how things had gone with Shannon and he could tell that she hadn´t told the other man anything.
"Didn´t expect anything less from you, Lieutenant."
His comment made her insides melt as the familiar warmth flooded through her, she had made him proud and that was the one thing Alicia Washington lived for.
