… … …
As creepy as it might seem Skye loves to watch Carter sleep. She enjoys watching his usually tense face relax as he lays on his stomach, his face towards her as well as an arm. She can’t deny the flutter in her heart when she thinks about the fact that maybe even in his sleep he’s reaching out for her.
In the daylight hours when he’s busy being the second in command in the Sixers camp and also their medicine man, he’s harsh, his face usually in a scowl when the men and woman under him don’t do things to his liking. They’re not always as quick or as ready as he would like them to be and it annoys him.
When he’s up and about, he’s about control, order, rules. Bowing down to no one, not even to Mira, while it’s obvious he respects her and does view her has his commander he doesn’t cower. It makes him unapproachable to many and she knows that’s the way he likes it.
With her he’s somewhat different, they have the push and pull of their relationship, their love/hate thing that she’s starting to come to realize is less hate by the day. He pushes her buttons but she knows how to push his too, how to poke and prod, tease and antagonize until the steel grip on his control breaks. It’s always explosive, just the way they both like it, a good way to release the tension of their lives and their precarious situation but it’s also a bit more of the persona he likes to put up.
A bit of a savage beast, taking what he wants, it’s taken her a while to see it for what it is, to understand what’s underneath. It’s because of this that she likes to watch him in the hours when all is quiet. It’s then that she thinks she really sees him, his face free of tense upset lines or the smirks he throws her way when he’s out to mess with her.
Here in the small and quiet hut he gets to call his own, in an even smaller bed that barely fits them she gets to take her time to really, really see the man that has somehow implanted himself in her life and she really doesn’t want to leave it.
He’s attractive, even when his face is usually covered with a light layer of jungle, there is no denying how handsome he is. Wild inky black hair, brows and lashes just as dark, standing out against his slightly tanned skin. Straight nose, lips that are softer than they should be for a man that lives in trees and that embarrassedly not only drives her to distraction when she thinks of them, they drive her mad with want when they are on her.
“You’re burning a hole through me, Princess,” he mutters, his voice rough with sleep as he cracks an eye open enough to look at her but not enough to be fully wake. “What are you doing?”
She should lie, make something up, her answer will either be teased at or put him on alert, but she finds that she can’t. The quiet that surrounds them now is precious for its rarity and she won’t taint it.
“Seeing.” She shifts closer to him; her face just inches from his and she can feel his breath on her skin when he makes a questioning noise. “I like watching you sleep, I get to see you.”
She doesn’t explain further than that and she finds she doesn’t need to as he now looks at her with both eyes wide open and clarity in them, she waits, bracing herself for whatever might be his reaction, she tells herself that she will not be hurt if he lashes out.
The hand that had been on her waist moves, leaving her cold as it leaves her skin only to warm her cheek when it’s surprisingly placed there. His thumb at her chin tilts her face until she is staring straight into black eyes with no way to avoid them.
“You’re the only one,” he says after a long pause, his voice soft while his words are strong with conviction.
He says nothing else and she doesn’t need him to say more, because she gets it, she sees him, she sees Carter and she’s the only one. Nodding her understanding she returns the slight smile he gives her before leaning in to give her a warm kiss.
“Good,” he whispers against her mouth. “Now you can stop watching me sleep, I know I’m hot Princess, but it’s a bit creepy,” he ends with a grin as she narrows her eyes at him, raising her hand to slap his shoulder she lets out a laugh when he catches her hand and pulls at her until she’s under him.
“And,” he continues his eyes dancing with mirth. “If you’re watching me sleep, I can’t watch you sleep.”
