It’s something like twenty five minutes later when she shows up at the front gates to find Carter helping check supplies with some of her people. Nearly half are staying behind; parents and children, the injured; she doesn’t mind, she’d made it clear to each of them that they were no longer loyal to the Phoenix Group or Lucas. They were free to do as they wanted. She was half surprised when every one of them said they’d always stand with her. Carter looks grim as she walks up; he glances at her and lets out a dry chuckle.

“You’re flushed, Mira.” He says with a hint of a smile on his mouth. She rolls her eyes.

“You get my stuff?” She asks, looking at the list in his hand. He nods, pointing to the truck ahead of them.

“We get to share the med truck. I chucked your bags into the back.” She nods, noticing his less than pleased looking expression.

“You find your Princess?” She asks, he shakes his head.

“She’d gone with Lucas to the Portal...If she’s not okay, I swear, Mira, I’ll wring his neck.” She puts a hand on his shoulder.

“She’ll be okay. Leave her a message and give it to Skye’s mom, I’ve got this.” She half-assedly pushes him out of the way and takes the Plex from him.

“You should get laid more often; puts you in a better mood.” He barely dances out of the way of her punch.

“Leave before I change my mind.” And he’s gone before she finishes the sentence.

The Phoenix Soldiers had brought twelve vehicles through the portal. Seven have been taken with them, filled with what most of the Phoenix’s are calling camping gear. They won’t be camping in trees because after the beautiful jungle the greenery peter’s out into nothing more than dry dirt surrounded and framed by rocky cliffs. There is the occasional forest and a large river that flows through the very middle of the Badlands. If she were to think about it longer, the floor of the badlands could be compared to images she’d seen of the bottom of the Grand Canyon only much more spacious. They’d only been traveling an hour when they find Lucas.

“It’s Lucas Taylor!” One of the Soldiers calls, halting the line of Vehicles. Mira and Carter are out of the med truck and rush over to where a few of the men in green are helping a pale and bloody Lucas Taylor their way. His shoulder is bleeding in two places, and he looks half conscious.

“Take him to the med truck.” Carter instructs, jaw tight. The grunts do that and Carter is quickly setting things up. Overhead fluorescents, medical kit, sterile pads, gloves. He tosses a pair at Mira, she isn’t a professional but she knows what to do when instructed.

“Lucas can you hear me?” Carter asks tapping his face, he gets a groan in response. He takes out a pen light and shines it in both of Lucas’ eyes. Before Mira can blink he’s cutting off the boy’s shirt.

“What happened, Lucas?” Mira asks and he opens his eyes and lets out a pained sound like a dying animal.

“Bucket shot me.” He gets out, voice sounding like a whine. He curses when Carter sticks him with an IV. Mira levels and look at her paramedic and knows he’s doing as much as he can not to overreact. Carter shoots him up with pain medication and the maniacal Taylor passes out.

“Shit head.” Carter growls continuing to work over Lucas’ unconscious form. Mira jumps out of the truck and nods to the Phoenix Soldiers.

“We can move on, he’ll be fine.” With a nod they move back to their designated vehicles. Mira climbs back into the truck and pulls the back up locking it in place. Carter is none too gently removing a bullet from Lucas’ shoulder with a pair of tweezers.

“You could use the magnetic ray to do that.” Her tone isn’t serious, she knows for a fact that Carter wouldn’t inflict more damage on Lucas. They start moving again and Carter pulls out a disfigured silver bullet.

“Good job, Princess.” He grins tossing the piece of metal to Mira. She rolls her eyes again, and watches Carter stick disinfectant and half the designated amount of cell-regenerating serum into the wounds. He stitches up the rest.

“One through and through, one entry wound. Skye is a good shot. And to what you said before; why waste important supplies?” He quickly puts a bandage over Lucas’s wounds and puts his arm in a sling.

“Help me move him to the back.” She does and has him securely on a single mattress with little trouble.

“How long will he be out?” She asks, helping pick up the used supplies, Carter shrugs. She cocks and eyebrow at him.

“I gave him enough to last three hours. He’ll he groggy as hell when he comes to, so I’ll vouch that we’ve got at least four hours of peace.” Mira sighs and puts the trash into a bin. She settles herself against the wall of the vehicle and tilts her head back. It’s a few moments before either speaks.

“I’m happy for you.” Carter says and Mira frowns cocking an eyebrow at him again.

“You and Mister Lieutenant. You’ve got someone to go back to whenever  whatever this is is done. So I’m happy for you. You need someone to make you smile.” Mira looks out the barred windows above Carter’s head.

“All knowing Carter Mitchell , ladies and gentlemen.” She manages something of a smile and he leaves it like that.

Laura Reilly is the first to spot the Commander and Skye Tate as they make their way through the perimeter they’d established. Taylor is leaning heavily on the young lady and it’s a slight cause for concern.

“Medical assistance at the North sector. The Commander is back.” She radios in and jogs over to meet her CO and Skye.

“Sir, you alright?” She asks as her ducks under his arm to help him walk. He manages a nod.

“I’ve had worse days, Reilly, a knife isn’t going to bring me down.” His voice is strained.

“If you say so, sir.” Reilly replies, wincing when she realizes that’s what Lieutenant Washington used to say. The Commander remains silent and soon a few medical staff take her and Skye’s places. The younger woman looks a little shaken and also has a substantial bruise in her hair line.

“You alright?” Reilly asks putting her hand on Skye’s shoulder. Skye nods.

“I shot Lucas Taylor, and he disappeared.” She says without realizing that she’s practically whispering. Reilly frowns and gives Skye’s shoulder and squeeze.

“Go get yourself checked out.” Skye nods and makes her way to the medical tent. It isn’t for another five minutes that Laura Reilly realizes she should have asked how things were in the colony. And by default, how Tim was doing.

It’s only a few hours later that they’re walking back in through the gates of Terra Nova. It puts an ache in her chest when she lays eyes on the damage that’s occurred. The scorched craters in the ground, the damage to the fence, the ashen Command Center, it makes her want to avenge Alicia Washington’s death. Jim Shannon had known how close she was with the Lieutenant, and had told her how she’d died. Shot in the face, bound, and unarmed. She shakes her head to rid herself of the mental image. She searches the growing crowd of civilians for one face. She smiles weakly when she finds him standing to the side with bandages on his right arm. He’s got a smirk on his face that she can’t help but love.

“I’m so glad you’re alright!” Corporal Camryn Clark bounds over and gives Laura a quick hug. The shorthaired brunette is sporting a colourful assortment of bruises and cuts on her face.

“I wish I could say the same for you, what happened?” She asks nodding at Cam’s face. She smiles.

“Lieutenant Washington ordered me and Tim to keep the kids safe inside the school.” As if that explained it all. Cam continues.

“Leah Marcos is one little spit-fire. She’d nearly followed the LT; Tim took down a grunt who was gonna shoot her after the kid kicked him in the nuts.” The pride in Cam’s eyes is unmistakable.

“That’s great. You’ll have to tell me more later.” Laura clasps Cam on the arm and strides over to Tim.

“You helped Leah.” She smiles fondly at him.

“Yeah, Laur'. It was the least I could do when the LT ordered us to keep those kids safe. I was an idiot before, there’s no way I was letting kids get hurt.”

“Your heart’s in the right place, you just need to get the connection to your brain working right for some things.” She taps him on the head and he leans down and kisses her lovingly.

“No connection problems when it comes to you. Not anymore, not after this.” He pulls something out of his pocket and presents in to her. It’s that stupid non-committal ring he’d promised her when everything was all right and dandy. She lets him put in on her finger.

“Yeah, you’re right about that.” She agrees and kisses him again, wrapping her arms around his neck. Her armour makes the action look near comical but he couldn’t care less and kisses her back with just as much zing. When they part she frowns, keeping a hand on his unwounded arm.

“Has Lieutenant Washington been found?” Tim shakes his head.

“Boylan was out and looking as soon as he’d contacted Taylor. A few others went looking but they only found the graves. Fifty eight bodies, thirty-two Phoenix Soldiers taken down.” Laura nods, and turns back to the crowd. She sees Taylor in the midst of it all, with a smile on his face that doesn’t reach his eyes. She’d been friends with Alicia for a reason, and she knows how close she’d been with Taylor, the same kind of close she is with Tim.

She prays that they can find her body to give her the proper burial she needs.
