Summary: Maddy's watching clouds when Mark finds her.

Maddy lay on the grass verge next to the north gate gazing up at the clouds that drifted lazily across a bright blue sky. They’d been here in Terra Nova for eight months already but the novelty of having fresh air, a clean atmosphere, still hadn’t worn off. It seemed almost impossible that an entire year had passed since she’d been lying in a hospital bed in the future coughing up blood from poisoned lungs. She took a deep breath in and held it, feeling that little pang of pain that had become so familiar.

A shadow fell across her vision, blocking out the clouds and making her shiver as she noticed the slight breeze. “You okay down there, Miss Shannon?” Mark Reynolds grinned down at her as she squinted her eyes against the sun. He was still decked out in army fatigues, hand resting gently on the sonic gun slung over his shoulder, sleeves rolled up in the afternoon heat. Maddy sat up and beamed at him, “Mark! Did you get off work already?” She shifted over and patted the grass beside her gesturing for him to sit.

“Yeah, it’s been a quiet day, Reilly sent our shift home early.” He grinned at her again, resting his gun on the grass and then sprawling out on his back, arms thrown over his eyes. Maddy giggled and lay down beside him. “That means I have a whole afternoon with absolutely nothing to do. Any suggestions?” He turned to her with a smile, his face now inches from hers.

Maddy glanced at his mouth as Mark flicked his tongue out to lick his lips. She let out a heavy breath and looked up at him. He was gazing at her with hooded eyes, a small smirk pulling at the corner of his mouth. “Uh, I could think of a few things.” Mark raised his eyebrow and smirked even wider, “Oh really now?” Maddy rolled her eyes and blushed, causing Mark to chuckle and reach a hand up to her cheek. He stroked it softly, following the blush down her to her jaw, and then leant his head in to capture her lips in a soft kiss.

They’d been getting quite a lot of practise in over the last few months, ever since that first kiss up a tree, but it still always managed to take Maddy’s breath away. She gasped as Mark rolled so he was half over her, supporting himself on one arm, and leant in for another kiss, this time a little more urgent. His tongue stroked her bottom lip, sucking it gently into his mouth, before reaching out to meet her tongue. Maddy moaned and ran her hands up Mark’s jaw to hook behind his neck, fingers scratching the short hair at the base of his neck. He gave an appreciative groan and deepened the kiss a little more.

She suddenly pulled her mouth away from his and pushed at his chest, prompting him to roll away from her. He gave a confused look and opened his mouth to speak but was cut off by Maddy’s mouth as she straddled him and pressed her lips to his once more, dress hitching up as her legs situated themselves on either side of his thighs. Mark’s eyes widened at the bold move and he remained frozen for just a few seconds before sitting up and wrapping his arms around Maddy’s waist, kissing back for all he was worth. They were both getting worked up, teeth clashing, tongues fighting, and hands frantic, as the kiss became more and more heated.

The feel of Mark’s hands rubbing small circles at the base of her back ignited something inside Maddy and she felt sudden urge in the bottom of her stomach, a kind of fuzzy warmth that made her want to grind her hips into down his. She didn’t even think, just instinctively pushed against him, rotating her hips and letting out a moan and the spark of pleasure that shot through her body.

Mark pulled away from Maddy’s mouth, eyes wide and breathless. His hands flew to her waist, gripping tightly to stop her movements. “Maddy, stop.” he grunted out, a pained look on his face. She sat panting for a few seconds, lips still puckered with a confused look on her face. They sat in silence just staring at each other, faces so close that Maddy could feel every one of Mark’s laboured breaths tickling against her cheek. The breeze picked up slightly, carrying the sound of distant voices towards them and Maddy’s eyes widened as she looked around remembering where she was.

“I…um…oh god.” She looked back at Mark, panic in her eyes and quickly pushed her self off his lap to sit in front of him. “I don’t even know what that was or why… I mean I didn’t mean to even…that just kind of happened and I don’t even…” She trailed off into a mumble, cheeks hot. Mark huffed beside her and Maddy turned to look at him with apprehension on her face.

He was running a hand through his hair, blue eyes still slightly dazed. Maddy mistook his silence for annoyance and felt her eyes well with hot embarrassed tears, “I’m sorry I didn’t mean to do that, I mean that’s totally not something I would usually do you know, I just did it and I don’t even know why oh god, I know we’re doing the whole courting thing and that was probably against like, every courting protocol in the book but we were just kissing and then there was like this weird thing in my belly and I was just-” She was cut off by Mark’s lips pressing chastely against hers, his hands cradling her face.

When they pulled away, the corners of his mouth were lifted up into a smile, eyes bright. “I love you.” Maddy looked at him confused for a second, “I love you too, wait aren’t you mad?” Mark chuckled and pulled her to him, cradling her against his chest. “No, I’m not mad, just a little taken aback that’s all.”

“Then why…?” He sighed and she looked up at him. His hand reached up and brushed a stray bit of hair behind her ear. “Maddy, I just…I want to do this right. I want to court you and kiss you, and I eventually want to do everything with you… but I really don’t want to start doing that everything on the grass next to the north gate, with loads of people wandering around gawping at us.” Maddy’s head shot up and she looked around in panic, “Who’s gawping at us??”

Mark laughed and pulled her back to him, hugging tight. “Okay so maybe that was hypothetical gawping, but my point still stands.” She looked up at him with her nose scrunched up, “Yeah, an audience is definitely not part of my fantasies.” Mark choked out a little cough, his eyebrows shooting up, “You have…um…fantasies?” Maddy groaned and leant back into him, closing her eyes. “Pretend I didn’t say that.”

Mark smirked widely at her, and leant down so that his mouth was hovering right beside her ear, “You know if those fantasies are anything like the little improvisation you just did, I think I’m looking forward to acting them out with you.” She shivered at his words and allowed herself to be pulled back against him so she was nestled between his legs. He wound his arms around her waist and planted a few wet kisses down her neck, humming in content. Maddy turned her head to look at Mark, a mischievous smile playing on her lips, “You promise?”

Mark chuckled and shook his head, giving Maddy one last firm kiss on her lips before pulling away, “I promise.” He grinned and stood up, reaching his hand out to her to pull her up. Maddy stood and brushed the grass from her clothes with one hand, as Mark had the other firmly gripped in his. “How about we go get some lunch?”

Maddy smiled widely and let him lead her out onto the path, hands clasped as they walked together towards home.
