Non-canon XI Fanfiction

Matt bobbed his leg innocently as he read. He heard the rummaging at his feet as Gilbert pulled out box after box from under Matt's bed. He barely paid attention, far more concerned with the little kneading claws on the small of his back. So it catches him by surprise when Gilbert makes an obvious statement.

"My little brother is gay."

Matt contemplates explaining that dating a guy for three months--or was it four-- was generally a sign that a man is gay. Or that he is fairly sure Ludwig told Gilbert himself. Instead he doesn't look up from his book.

"What was your first clue there Gilbert?" He flipped his page and still didn't look up when a large stuffed bear collided with his head. Flip. Flip. Silence from the other party was unnerving but Matt was willing to wait it out.

"I want a nephew. How the hell am I supposed to get a nephew when he's gay?! He needs to have children dammit."

If Matt didn't know better, he'd say Gilbert was sulking. He does in fact know that that is exactly what is happening and he sighs softly, closing his eyes.

"I hear you can adopt them you know."

"Well yeah but he needs to have an awesome kid! How can we be sure his kid will be awesome?!"

"...It's not your kid Gilbert. It'd be his. Besides I'd think Feli would want more than one," Matt dropped his head on his arms, yawning softly, "I can see Feli with a whole house full of kids. He seems like the type to just adopt kids forever you know."

"...So I'd get mutiple chances to pass on my awesomeness? Yes!"

Matt opened his eyes and almost jumped at the red eyes far too close. He's sure he's blushing, he can feel it, but he shoves it down. Straight. Straight. Gilbert is straight.

"Can I help you Gilbert?" There, not even an edge of nervousness to his voice.

"I'm hungry. Make me pancakes. My awesomeness deserves them."

That wicked grin makes him flush all over, and he swears he must be glowing or something. He can feel the blush all over and he scrambles up, coughing and ignoring the yowl of protest from Neko as her comfortable home is moved.

"Come on Birdie, I want some of those awesome pancakes." Gilbert is tugging his hand, they're touching and he worries his lip to keep himself distracted.

"Fine fine, let me go and I'll do it."

Later that night, Matt is working his way through a third beer. He will never ask Maxxie how he gets these parties going or what it involves, because really he doesn't want to know.

"Matthew! Come here, ve~!" A voice calls out from a table across the bar and Matt carefully cradles his beer as he manuvers, ducks, and bobs through the crowd. His seat happens to be between Lovi and Feli, or at least that is where Feli is gesturing. Ludwig, Gilbert, and Antonio are all talking in loud voices across the table, about what he can't be sure.

It takes the rest of the beer for him to speak up and he finally does, loud and dejected.

"You know what sucks?"

Lovi and Feli look over at him with almost curiousity. The wine they pass between them is steadily disappearing so nothing surprises them anymore.

"Falling for straight guys." Matt finishes proudly and stop the bartender for another bottle.

"Ve, Matthew, who is it?" Feli leans in, curious despite himself, but Lovi just nods, taking a deeper sip of his wine.

"G--" He pauses, catches the albino's gaze across the table and comes back to himself. Maybe he will tell Feli later. Maybe. He sips the beer gratefully when it comes.

"...Cheers to that." Lovi mumbles from beside him and Matt catches that look in his eyes. It's that same miserable wonderful awful look that Matt has seen in himself in the mirror. Loving someone you can't have, it's the most awful wonderful miserable thing in the world and he raises his bottle.

"Cheers." Their bottle and glass clink and the atmosphere between them settles. Trust isn't really an issue anymore. They're comrades in the same fight.

But it still leaves the problem of how to love a loud, straight, obnoxious, jerk.

Maybe that answer will be at the bottom of the bottle. If it's not, well at least he had fun trying to find it.
