[ CHARACTER INFORMATION ]
Name: Lady Toph Bei Fong of the Gaoling Fongs. Also known as Toph, and the Blind Bandit,
Age: 13
Gender: Female
Fandom: Avatar: The Last Airbender/Legend of Aang
Timeline: End of the series, which is why she’s 13 and not 12 (my logic is she had to have a birthday somewhere in the year long fiasco that was Sozin’s Comet)
History:
Here. Character Personality: Toph was, and still is, a very stubborn, prideful girl. She used to be vehemently against anyone helping her at all, taking this as pity for her blindness. However, time with the Gaang has tempered this, and now she’s willing to accept help from people she respects. If she feels that, by allowing the person to help, it’ll make the situation worse, she’s say as much and do it herself. She still doesn’t take insults or insinuations that, as a blind girl, she can’t function like a normal person, and has a habit of attempting to prove the person wrong, only to inadvertently prove them right. (For example, when told she couldn’t help hang posters, she took one, pasted it on backwards, and went, “It’s upside-down, isn’t it?”)
Raised as a young noble, Toph is perfectly capable of handling other nobles and behaving like one. That doesn’t mean she does. She would much rather run around barefoot (this is in part because that’s how she sees) than sit inside and take tea. Toph’s personal hygiene is also somewhat lacking, as she usually is covered in a ‘healthy coating of earth’, tends to burp a lot, and isn’t too terribly fond of washing the dirt off. She will when it gets ridiculous, and it’s not as if she likes being filthy. She just likes dirt.
Toph is a quick learner, and is quick to adapt to a new situation. On multiple occasions, she’s taken a bad situation (getting conned) and turned it into a situation benefiting herself and her friends (conning the con man with Earthbending). Her usual way of handling a problem she can’t turn to her benefit is to face it head on and just charge through; however, this doesn’t always work and when it doesn’t, Toph is not the happiest of people.
Being blind, Toph doesn’t worry too much about how she looks, as long as she looks presentable. It does affect her, though, when others insult her looks, since how can she respond to that? When she can respond to someone else’s taunts, Toph is a master snarker and gives mildly derogatory nicknames to everyone she meets. If she’s a friend, she means it affectionately. Honestly. She’s a loyal friend, after all, and would never insult her friends. Outright, at least. She’s good with sarcastic jokes, though, like when people forget she’s blind.
Character Abilities: Toph is an Earthbending Master, though her style is a little different from the general norm. In our world terms, while most Earthbenders use a variation of the Hung Gar style of martial arts, Toph uses a variation of the Southern Praying Mantis Kung Fu style. This style allows her to keep her feet in contact with the earth, allowing her to see. She sees by using the seismic waves each person gives off with their heartbeat and footsteps, and by using her steps to judge where buildings and the like are. A side effect of this ability is being able to sense when a person is lying by their heartbeat.
She’s also capable of simply punching people, and if accepted will likely try to adapt her Earthbending to merely fighting. She’s stubborn like that.
A bonus ability, unique to Toph, is Metalbending. Since metal is merely refined earth, and Toph relies on vibrations from the Earth, she can smack metal, sense the earth in it, and manipulate that. This also allows her to see on metal floors and ships.
Character Weaknesses: Character Weaknesses: She’s blind. That is the crux of most of Toph’s problems, and her biggest weakness. Since her sight relies on the ground, she cannot fight airborne opponents and is completely and totally blind if lifted into the air at all. She can’t sense anything in the air, including her own projectiles. Dodging projectiles is dependant on whether or not she can sense the person throwing it and how they’re moving.
Despite using the earth to see, her seismic sense is severely limited in terms of terrain. Sand, for example, makes everything seem fuzzy, although she working on bending sand. Other terrains can also cause problems for her, and she is blind on ice. When in a situation where she is blind, Toph panics.
Even though she's gotten better at accepting instructions from others, Toph still has problems with authority. This stems from her overbearing parents, and she will likely always be somewhat against total authority figures. This used to cause problems in the Gaang, but she trusts them and will work with them easily. People she's not familiar with, however, might be met with resistance, which can cause problems in a fight. Toph is also occasionally prone to bouts of insecurity, mostly related to her appearance. Being blind means she isn't exactly the most appearance-obsessed girl, but she does occasionally wonder about how she looks and what people are saying about her.
Despite being an accomplished Earthbender and stronger than the average thirteen-year-old, not quite five foot girl, Toph is still a thirteen-year-old, not quite five foot girl and has all the limitations that comes with it. She can't lift very heavy objects without using her Earthbending and she can't reach very high objects without her Earthbending.
[ MEISTER ONLY SECTION ]
Why your character should be a Meister: While Toph’s blindness is an issue, she is a strong individual who likes to be in at least a little control of the situation. She’s determined, and is not afraid to take on anything thrown at her.
Also, as a Weapon, she would feel insecure and out of her depth, as being swung around doesn’t let her feet touch the ground.
Meister Ability: Given Toph’s blindness, I would have to request a new ability be made for her. It would need to allow her to see with her feet, like her Earthbending does (the only name I can come up with for it Seismic Soul or something equally dorky). I would also like her to be able to sense when others are lying, though it would be a matter of mun permission and Toph focusing really hard on the person. I understand that this may be too much, however, and will understand if it’s not allowed.
[ SOUL INFORMATION ]
Soul Description: Stubborn, determined, loyal, strong, temperamental, and down-to-earth.
Soul Appearance: Toph’s soul is green, with her headband-and-the-pom-poms. Instead of round eyes, though, she has two lines, and a smirk.
