Is
this really worthy of top-page news? XD
This, on the other hand, is very interesting (and is not in the top section of the page ¬¬). In fact I'm going to summarise it here.
Some myths about reducing carbon emissions, and what you should do instead
MythTruth
Energy-saving lightbulbs are the best way to save electricity at home. They do of course use less electricity. But the emissions reduction is miniscule compared to the massive energy consumption of modern "lifestyle" appliances. So if you want to save electricity at home, the lesson here is not to spend your money on plasma TVs, games consoles etc.
Excess packaging (e.g. for food) is evil.Yes, excess packaging is wasteful and extractive processes for them are environmentally damaging, but a much more significant cause of greenhouse gas emissions is rotting wasted food. The lesson: eat all that nice food you buy. Again, this is actually money-saving. (And if you don't get around to eating your greens, donate them to me.)
Hybrid cars are the best way to minimise personal transport emissions. If you must own a car, then hybrids are about the most expensive way you can go about minimising emissions. Just as effective are modern small diesels. Emphasis here on small.
Food miles are bad.Once again, this is true, but eating meat is far worse. Quote from the article (so that people don't just think I'm doing this for some kind of moral superiority): "A kilo of beef from the farm next door will have 50 times the global warming effect of a can of beans shipped from Canada. Taking a few steps towards a vegan diet will reduce carbon emissions far more than local purchasing. Avoiding meat and also buying locally is better still."
Microgeneration of electricity is a good way to cut emissions (in Britain).Maybe so, but only if you have a lot of money to invest in the equipment. Apparently microgenerated electricity can cost 10 times as much as coal-fired power stations. The lesson: spend your money on loft insulation (and, we suppose, other types of house insulation) instead.
There's also something about flying, of course, but we all know that one already.
I like articles like that. They make me feel like I'm actually doing the right thing by taking all these personal responsibility decisions.
