Rain, rain, go away

Not really, we're in desperate need of it.  But this was a day I had scheduled to be on the roof installing a couple of tubular skylights.  As is customary for Missouri weather these days, nothing ever comes around in moderation.  We woke up to it at 5 AM coming down like crazy, and it hasn't let up a bit; they're saying flash floods are likely and that we'll have had at least 3" of rain in short order.

Billy and I had a rare 4 days off work together until today; it's been nice, as we're seeing less of each other and rarely get more than one day off work at the same time.  Billy decided to start an LPN program at a local college, and may go ahead with another program when he's through and get his RN.  This has been a HUGE step for him. He had himself convinced he could not do well in college, and the first time I met his Dad he joked about how stupid Billy was.  Nice.  He is currently taking Anatomy, Foundational Math, and English.  A good 80% of his time at home when he isn't sleeping is now spent studying.  I'm pleased to see how much of what he's currently studying I remember from my college days all those years ago.  The current plan is to retire as soon as I'm able to, then start this same program myself for career #2.  I can't wait.

Life with Billy is good.  My main complaint is that he is physically and psychologically incapable of loading a dishwasher correctly.  I could do a better job if I just gathered all the dirty dishes in my arms, opened the door, and threw them in.  I've tried to impress upon him that I should load the dishwasher and he should unload it, but he secretly delights in putting me in berserker mode when I have to re-load it.  If that's the worst thing I can think of concerning life with Billy, I think I'm pretty well satisfied.

Yesterday, I installed a fan/light combo in the bathroom.  I was amazed that this took me the better part of the day.  But it's nice.  I'm also going to put one of the tubular skylights in the bathroom, as it's otherwise so dark in there; it's on the side of the house that the carport is, so a lot of the light is blocked.  The other will go in the kitchen.

I've become very involved in my Church again.  My two year stint on the local chapter of the Alzheimer's Association was winding down in April, and I was trying to decide if I wanted to serve another term.  Just then, one of the Board Members from my Church's Board of Directors approached me about filling out a term for a board member who had to resign.  I appreciated God making this decision so easy.  I'd been on the Board there once before during a very bad time for our Church; I ended up leaving the Board and the church for about 2 years.  This time around, it's a whole different ballgame.  At my second meeting, officers were elected and I was elected Secretary.  It's a good group of folks there now who walk the walk.  One of the Board Members is a 92 year old guy whom we're all just crazy about; he's one of the greatest people it's ever been my privilege to know.  Here's the "official" pic as church secretary.  Who'd have thought you'd need to get your picture made to take minutes at Board meetings?!?

In the "good news but probably bad news" category, in the last couple of months a new franchise sandwich shop has opened nearby ("Which 'Wich"--stupid name but amazingly good food) as well as Einstein Bros. bagels which is really WAY too close and convenient.

Well, I think I'm going to look at this as a sign that I should actually relax on a vacation day.  Oh, BTW, hearty congratulations go out to my dear friends gentleeleos  and fusis for increasing the world's population by two with the addition of two very exceptional humans, Ms. Iris and Mr. Dax.  I can't think of any two people that are better suited to be mothers; I know your babies have such a fun-filled life ahead of them with the two of you leading them on.  Congratulations!
