You know when the word "caucus" has to have five descriptive modifiers in front of it that it's at its elemental stage. All the same, it was an absolute blast; the caucuses were held tonight, my state legislative district had ours at an area middle school.
I can now proudly say that I am a Clinton delegate for my state legislative district! Not only that, but the rules dictate that each district at these caucuses must nominate a candidate for President. I shot up out of my seat and gave a quick nomination speech for Hillary and it was too awesome (the experience, probably not the speech...though I don't think it was too shabby). The meeting tonight is step one in choosing the State's delegates who will attend the convention in Denver. From here, all of our County legislative districts will meet to vote again from the pool of legislative district delegates, then send delegate candidates on to the Regional, and from there to the State, and from there to Denver. I will of course not end up being a delegate to the convention; I probably won't make it past the next round, nor do I think I should...it was just such a cool experience to be involved in this tonight. As much volunteering as I've done for the Democratic party over the years, I can't believe I've never done this...it was a blast.
Obama supporters were there as well; they put two groups of chairs at opposite ends of a school cafeteria which we broke into after a beginning organizational session. I saw an old friend I hadn't seen in 2 or 3 years...she said, "I hope you're here for the right candidate!" "I am!" I said as I hopped up to give her a hug. She and her husband were there as Obama supporters. As the room broke into two groups, she said, "Doug, there's still time for you to see the light and come to our side of the room!" I laughed and waved and said, "See ya! Wouldn't want to be ya!" We're gonna work together on the campaign of a guy for our State Representative from this district; it will be fun to hang out with her more in the next few months.
If you get a chance to do something like this, get out there and support your candidate; it's really a pretty exhilarating experience.
