I Wouldn’t Steal Either

I’m always annoyed when I go to the movies or rent a dvd and am forced to watch those patronizing ads about how copying a movie is supposed to be stealing. Hey, idiots, it isn’t the same thing! And besides, you’re targetting people who just paid money to see your content! Ironically, the easiest way to avoid that stupid crap would be to just download the movies from the internet. Talk about counter-productive campaining…

That’s why I was glad to see the I wouldn't steal campaign by the European Greens that emphasizes the same thing  (sharing isn’t the same as stealing), and also that supporting the artists doesn’t have to mean supporting multi-national corporations’ outdated business models. I’m waiting to see the link to the campaign on the Finnish Green League’s site (but not really holding my breath).

Meanwhile, there is (once again) talk about the European Parliament planning to introduce “voluntary” content filtering by the ISPs and cutting off all internet access from alleged infringers (and all their families too, of course).

And the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health would like to make a law that would in effect ban all online poker playing in Finland. (They’ve disguised it as “helping people who have addiction to gambling” by “only” requiring the gaming companies and the credit card companies to reimburse the players the money they lost gambling online, and also saying that playing poker is essentially a pyramid scam.) Not surprisingly nobody is saying anything about the state monopoly-owned slot machines that, at least according to the couple of studies I’ve seen, are much bigger a problem for the real addicts.

finland, links
