2014 plans and things

Welp, it is indeed a new year. I was fairly unproductive in 2013 opposed to the last two years; 2011 I completely finished a NaNo novel and even in 2012 I wrote like 70% of a novel-length fanfic. 2013 was sort of...full of half-finished things and slogging along on promised projects at a unsteady and unconstant pace ( Read more... )

I don't think PSoG would be unpublishable because it's been up online. I'm sure there are some places that wouldn't take it for that reason, but I've certainly seen plenty of online authors who have later published things they've previously had up online.

That's true. I was mainly going off of what I've seen some online authors saying about the topic, like when they get asked why such-and-such classic of theirs isn't published and the answer is usually 'too many people have read it and it's unpublishable.' Things that have been up for free online is still like a weird category that I don't think publishers know how to deal with yet.

I think some of the m/m publishers are probably more familiar with stories that started online because it's pretty common. You'd probably have to shop it around a bit. I think, in a way, a story having been online should be helpful because its online popularity can show how well it's likely to do once published.

Yeah, I mean I'm sure I really won't know until I actually try. It's just hard to tell if including that type of info in a query would be harmful or helpful, and I'm sure it depends, but there's only so many m/m publishers out there.

You could probably make it a discussion post on The Slash Pile. Which m/m publishers accept stories that have been online? There must be some folks who know.

That's probably a good idea actually.

I know Bertha is one person on there who's published a story she had up online. Actually, more than one I think. The publisher she's with might be specifically for more kinky stuff, though. Bertha does slave fic.

I'm not familiar with her, maybe because that's not a genre I really read. But that's cool.
