The Ithaca SufferJets took on the Syracuse Psycho Dolls last Friday night at the Cass Park Rink.

The Ithaca SufferJets (in grey) take on the Syracuse Psycho Dolls (in black). Watch the Ithaca jammer (with the red star on her helmet) make it through the pack to score. It's a bit hard to see the star, but you can hear the crowd roar and see the referee pointing at her when she makes it through.

The line-up: Home team Ithaca SufferJets in grey and red, visiting team Syracuse Psycho Dolls in black and pink.

The pack gets into position. You can see the jammers (with the star on their helmets) waiting in the rear.

And we're off!

Ithaca jammer passes the pack to score points. The referee indicates that she's the lead jammer.

The star on the helmet indicates the jammer, who is the only one that can score points for the team by passing blockers.

Other skaters are blockers, who try to prevent the opposing jammer from passing them or help their own jammer to make it through the pack. The stripe on the helmet indiates the pivot, a special blocker; I wasn't really clear on what her role is.

For every blocker the jammer laps, she scores a point.

Blocker reaches back to try to give her jammer a boost.

Zoom-zoom!

Falls are quite common. Roller derby is very much a contact sport. One Psycho Doll broke her leg within five minutes of the start of the game.

There are penalties for illegal contact. Here one Psycho Doll and two SufferJets sit out their respective penalties.

Final score: Ithaca wins by 3 in a last-jam nail-biter!

Victory lap: SarahBellum gets high-fives from the opposing team.
