HAHAHAHAHA last year her book was like at the end of the term and only IB students in my class had to read it. The rest of us got to choose any memoir from an author of our choice. Hahahahaha thinking about it now, I still rejoice in how awesome that was. And I read such a good memoir too.

Nicholas Sparks' Three Weeks with my Brother. I don't think you're gonna like it.

Wait, wait, so House of the Spirits and Paula?

Because not only is that two Isabel Allende books, but THEY'RE THE FUCKING SAME. Paula is like, the version without magical weird crap. No one in my class read it. I think I read like ten pages and said "fuck this shit."

Drew, if you have to read Allende instead of Woman Warrior, be happy for it. Woman Warrior is, to me, a complete bullshit with bad writing style and inacurate cultural references. It's pointless and ridiculously stupid. It's like Barbara Kingsolver on intense crack.

what the fuck. inaccurate cultural refrences? they are memoirs by a second generation emigrant retelling the tales she heard as a child by her mother and father who grew up in a chinese village. the rest is fiction. that's where style comes in. her style, her fiction = her emotions. and how is it pointless when she's talking about such important shit? like racism, sexism, and classism? and it's not like barbara kingsolver. at all.

The inaccurate part is when she claims that her stories are traditional stories that are told to Chinese children. The fact is her stories are what's left of her childhood memory combining with her personal imagination. Some of her stories are combinations of different stories together. That's why it's inaccurate. Those traditional stories are really important to Chinese culture. It's like Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty to us. That is, if you think that you can read this book and learn traditional Chinese stories, you are wrong. To me, she just wrote a bunch of stories and tries to sell them by luring American readers to think that they can learn Chinese culture through her tales, which was exactly what I thought at first ( ... )
