One of my life goals, as in things I wanna do before I die, is to go to Japan at least once.
Next summer (summer '07), I have the opportunity to go for 2 weeks fairly cheaply, and if I get a job this coming fall then I can do it. Also, I'd try to take a class or two in Japanese at Macomb or Oakland before I go, that way I can at least attempt to communicate.
A couple weeks ago I was subbing at a high school that has a Japanese club, and the teacher had all this information out on his desk. I wrote down an internet address, and looked it up when I got home. It had all this stuff about how to learn the alphabets (they have 3 different ones) and it seemed simple enough I could do it. This past week I've managed to learn the 71 Hiragana characters, and today am moving on to learn the 30 y blends. I'm not sure yet if I want to tackle learning Kanji without professional help, and I don't know if I wanna bother with Katakana (Kanji and Katana are the other 2 alphabets); any suggestions,

It's really frustrating, but fun too. I have a WHOLE new respect for kids trying to learn the alphabet. This is HARD. As adults we take for granted the way we instantly know that "b" make the buh sound and "s" makes the sss sound and that we know the difference between "b" and "d". Kids of the world, you have my new -found respect.
So anyway, I'm SLOWLY fullfilling my dream of seeing Japan. Whoo-hoo!
