Or, well, one decoration. I love Halloween decorations, and they're starting to catch on over here in England, but the fact is that I'm absolutely terrible about putting decorations out and then putting them away again.
So instead, I made myself a Halloween throw in yellow, orange, purple, and black granny squares. Right now, it's thrown over the sofa, and when Halloween is over, I'll fold it up and put it in the blanket cupboard. Easy peasy.
I learned some interesting things with this blanket. I ended up using more black than expected, because I changed the original plan. I was going to sew the squares together, but that takes so long, so when the time came to join it all up, I used the really cool joining method I found
here. But this method adds another row to each square, hence the blanket turning out to be substantially more black than expected. Here's what it looked like before I added the border.
The black is pretty overwhelming in this photo, and you can imagine how much more so when you're looking at the whole blanket. (In case you're wondering about the end bits of yarn, I don't cut those off until after I block or wash the item, and I don't do that until it's finished.)
Then I found the neatest border in my book of edgings...they look like little pumpkins, don't they?!
And the orange border really made the whole blanket 'pop'.
Anyway, I'm learning more with each project, and that's really cool. I also have something real for myself or to give as a gift to show for the time spent working.
