Day trip to Arbor Low Stone Circle

Jul 31, 2011 09:28

Arbor Low Stone Circle is an ancient momument, approximately 3,000 - 6,000 years old. It's about an hour-and-a-half drive from home -- I can't say for sure, having taken a couple of wrong turns getting there. :-D) This site is on a private farm, which means you get to walk through a farm and some of its fields to get there. Being Not From Farm Country, I'm afraid I was nearly as taken with the farm-stuff as with the site itself. Also, as I arrived at around the same time several other large-ish groups did, I wasn't able to take any photos of the whole circle. I have a weird thing about not wanting people in my scenic photos, and one of the groups spent the whole time I was there gathered at the stones in the centre. I think they were a group of pagans getting ready to celebrate a ritual of some kind. I didn't quite have the nerve to ask if I could join them.

So, in the end, I think I took more farm photos than stone photos, but I spent a lot of time at the circle, soaking up the energy of the earth, the stones, and the sunshine. Oh, and I bought a dozen fresh eggs from the farmer....so fresh he had to actually walk up to the hen house to get them!

If you're into Large Machinery, you can see more pix of the tractor here, here, and here. I actually took these on behalf of e_moon60's DH, who recently had surgery and is currently prohibited from handling Large Machinery until he's more healed. R--, enjoy!

And now for what you really came for.... The Henge Itself

In farewell, a shot of the new-mown field. Silly me, I always envisioned the 'colour of a new-mown field' to be a pale gold. Imagine my surprise and delight to discover that it's really a bright but soft green. Not sure Internet photos can do justice to the real thing.

I'm off work on vacation the next two weeks, and hope to do a few more day trips, in addition ot other things I need to take care of.
