Last week I hopped in my car after work on Wednesday and headed west. As always, I made an obligatory stop in Effingham

because it's the subject of a Ben Folds song. Truth be told, I can't seem to make the 10-12 hour drive without taking a nap and Effingham just happens to be the halfway point between Columbus and Kansas City.
This trip however, I headed south just east of St. Louis on my way to Springfield for the Ozark Empire Fair. Why would I drive almost 700 miles to go to a regional fair? Peter Frampton is why! Well, a combination of Peter and my ex-husband Rick. Ricks' health hasn't been the greatest lately, so when he asked if I wanted to come see Frampton with him, I jumped at the chance. Not sure how much longer he'll be feeling up to excursions like this, but I was damn sure I wasn't going to miss making a few more memories with him.
Rick and I saw Peter open for Stevie Nicks at Red Rocks on our honeymoon in 1986 and again in 1987 when he toured with David Bowie's Glass Spider tour. Seeing him play the Ozark Fair was surreal. I couldn't believe we were as close as we were or that he was playing to so few people. The grandstand was about half full. He rocked of course and I had a great time with my ex and his family. I know many people find it strange to be on good terms with an ex, but if not for Rick, I wouldn't have my son Alex or a wealth of musical history and trivia that he basically quizzed into my brain for the six years we were together.
