It was April/May 2003 and my friend Robin was about to be married to her fiancée, Nick, from across the pond.
I was super excited because I was going to sing "At Last" as the bride and groom had their first dance together. Nick's friend Simon flew in from London for the wedding and stayed in town long enough to attend my annual Cinco de Mayo birthday bash. Even though I was very inebriated that night, I remember how wonderful it was to listen to him regale us with his tales. I love men with accents, actually women with accents too. They make everything sound so much more vibrant and interesting.
Simon knew that I was on my way to London after my party and told me to look him up while I was there, not knowing he would be my knight in shining armor for part of my trip.
Looking back at my journal from that trip, I didn't post much about him, but I know I thanked him continually for helping me rescue myself and turn my last three days in London into some of my most treasured memories.
You can read about those three days

From giving me advice on where to spend my days, meeting up with me at the pub every night, getting me to try my now favorite beer Hoegaarden, and late night wandering around Kensington, he was a gracious host and a good friend to a girl he'd only met a few weeks before.
I had hoped to meet up with him again on my trip to Europe next spring and Robin tells me that he was planning to hop across the pond in 2011 as well.
I'm saddened by his loss. He was a wonderful man and a good friend. Here he is with his family in Hampshire this Christmas.
