Tracy Chapman

I'd honestly forgotten how much her music moves me. I know that I know all the words to every song and I listened to all 6 albums over the two days before the show, but that still didn't prepare me for how much her voice and music moves me in person.

Her first cd, "Tracy Chapman" served as the soundtrack to my divorce. Then "Crossroads" and "Matters of the Heart" were my single cd's. I felt every note and lyric on every song.

Then along came Doug and we moved to Austin and she came out with "New Beginnings". I was as uplifted as she was on that album. Things with Doug had soured by the time "Telling Stories" came out and he passed away the next year.

Now for me "Let It Rain" is like another new beginning and it was all brought home last night. She played so many songs from her early albums that I found myself balling like a baby through the first 30 - 45 minutes of the show. It brought back so many emotions that I had thought were buried long ago. Then she rocked out for another hour, adding blues licks to almost every song and just shaking it all over the stage. She covered "House of the Rising Sun" and "Get Up Stand Up" and totally rocked out "Give Me One Reason" just like her last concert.

She did end the show on a somber note with "Goodbye" from her latest album, but that didn't manage to dissipate the high that I had achieved from the rest of the show. It was an extremely emotional night for me and also for my friend Marina, who just lost her sister two months ago.

But we managed to bounce back and met up with friends and partied at Trudy's until 1:30am.

All in all it was an excellent night and I'm so glad that we got the scoop on those free tickets.
