Entering the Atrium this morning, I chanced to look up at the wall. Posted there before me, in a bright yellow and black, was an oversized poster with the words "Love it? Hate it? Porn Nation Come debate." on it.
Excitement! I don't watch porn, mind you. I'm not that interested in the actual videos/writings/games/etc.
But I do love reading about contemporary opinion on porn, and sex and gender roles in society and entertainment (especially video games and other forms of art). I had these wild visions flashing through my head of
Violet Blue and
Bonnie Ruberg standing on stage shouting their thoughts and opinions to the gathered audience. Even though Bonnie's in France right now, so it probably wouldn't happen that way. But still!
Then my eyes, completing their journey down the bill, were caught by some minuscule white text near the lower edge.
"Brought to you by Christian Campus Crusaders."
Well fuck.
Just another chance to beat up on the average college student over our chosen sets of morals, and try to evangelize us into repenting our sins and ignoring the existence of our nether parts.
Now that I looked closer, the black frame about the words "Porn Nation" was sporting a curvy set of devil horns and tail. Already despaired, I was hardly surprised when I encountered the alternative incarnation of this ad.
This one is a grayed-out image of a college age girl biting her lower lip and glancing guiltily to her left. The girl is subordinate in the shot, giving her the mien of a naughty little child caught stealing cookies after her bedtime. Written across the top of this one, in a skinny white typeface, were the words "Are we obsessed with Sex?"
Thanks a lot, Christian Campus Crusaders, for not only demonizing sex but also subordinating women.
And ruining my morning.
