So I'm blaming it on the green beans. Standing in the kitchen snapping the ends off green beans last night, my thoughts went back to Grandma, and shelling peas and snapping green beans on her front porch. Lots of talking over buckets of vegetables and sitting outside with the fans on. The atmosphere was a bit different here last night, me and eventually M1, standing at the counter, snapping beans and listening to country music on pandora. It does make me miss a few things from my childhood. I would really like to start hitting the farmer's market on a regular basis to get good vegetables, and teach M2 how to shell peas and snap the ends off the beans with me.
To add to the Grandma memories, I made her banana pudding tonight. We hosted our Bible Study group and ate "home" food (for me at least). Barbecue chicken (with M1's BBQ sauce mmmm), green beans and red potatoes, mac and cheese, sweet tea, and banana pudding for dessert (still warm, of course!). Good eats, good friends, good times.
And another memory crept in as I was cleaning up tonight. IT was triggered by the barbecue sauce spilled on the pot holder. Once upon a time, in our old house, M1 made BBQ for supper. Now, M1 got his BBQ sauce recipe from his grandmother. The contents are a secret, but I will tell you clearly that it involves honey. And, as usual, things got a little messy. A day or so later, I come down for breakfast and fire up the stove and put the tea kettle on so I can make some grits. (Do you ever get the feeling I might be a little southern??). Or maybe hot chocolate. I can't remember very well, but those are the only two things I use hot water for, so it was one or the other. So I go about getting my cup or bowl ready and turn around...and there are flames coming up the sides of my tea kettle. I don't clearly remember what happened next, but in my head there was screaming and a flaming tea kettle flying out the wooden screen door into the side yard. I don't think I actually threw it, but M1 and I did get the flames put out. Then we discovered the culprit. The BBQ coated pot holder stuck to the bottom of the tea kettle, with lovely spiral burn marks where it had cooked so brightly on the stove.
Yes, I'm rambling and trying to stall going to bed. Seriously, who starts a three day weekend by going to bed early?!
