I dunno, I more got the impression that FOTC took off entirely by accident. If they wanted to be a well-known band, it doesn't make sense that they'd drop their most successful venture as a band (i.e. the show) right when it's at its strongest, and have no particular plans to work together again. I could be biased, being insanely in love with the two of them, and with the Conchords in general (the tv show's version of "Boom" made me almost hyperventilate with laughter and joy) but the impression that I've gotten over the last few months, reading interviews with them (always separately, and mostly with Jemaine, since he was in that silly movie recently), is that they're more like "it was a lark, we had a good time, and it's way less of a good time now, and we're really sick of each other and need to spend an indefinite amount of time apart". I haven't yet seen the second season of the show, so I can't speak to a drop-off in quality, but the first season is full of solid gems. I don't think they're Jesus Christ or anything, but they do crack my shit up, and their music makes me realize that there's been a real deficit of parody-rock in my life for the last 25 years and that's gotta change.
Also, I thought I was a late bloomer to the wonders of FOTC! It's always nice to look forward to getting into things at your own pace. Then you can be greedier!
