I think it's significant that I've had to torrent Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog even after having actually purchased it from iTunes (since the stream on Hulu also doesn't play). It doesn't just not play, it actually CRASHES my computer. (But I will see it, by God; the first four minutes of part I, which I've experienced about six times now, is ( Read more... )

Because I first tried to watch it on Hulu, and that didn't work; and then I decided I'd just drop $ on it to buy it from the iTunes store, thinking it'd be delivered in .mov format... but it's kind of not, and I can't even find the actual files themselves (they aren't in the iTunes library, that's for sure)... and then the purchased copies actually crashed my 'puter.

So I torrented it and now I have it as .avi files. And I can watch it. Eventually - I'm starving after my trip to Value Village, and an inadequate breakfast of a quarter of a bagel with cream cheese and a quadruple soy latte, so I'm going to the pub to get a cheeseburger and a salad.

I have no idea; all I know is that it crashed my machine (which, in general, .mov files never do). I couldn't find the files that were downloaded from iTunes (because, honestly, I've had about 30 minutes to deal with this entire issue from the beginning) but they did show up in the application - but I don't know what format they were in. I have never tried to buy video from iTunes before, and now I know that it's best for me not to bother.

Mark, c'mon, you know I'm stupid; but the problem is now solved. I figured out a workaround to get the results I needed, so there it is. I'm just trying not to consider myself out four bucks for absolutely nothing; my financial situation isn't so dire that it's that big of a deal. I'm just considering it a tip. :)

Older Macs and PCs simply don't have the processing power to run videos encoded with modern codecs. I'm fairly sure Apple's encoding the video streams in their downloadable files with H.264, which will seriously chew up any CPU more than a couple of years old. And if Apple were to still be putting out videos that would play on older processors, I certainly wouldn't pay them for the download privilege since quality would be dramatically lower than videos encoded in the more current fashion.

I'm bummed that you can't run .avi (I've never heard of that) or else I'd just send you part III. It's essential!

i know you would. ;) you're jawsome like that.
i'm thinking of spending the $4, just to see it. i mean it all goes to a good place yadda yadda and even if i don't (in general) care for mister wheedon's works, i'm really really enjoying the musical.

(and i'm too cheap to wait for it on DVD and spend more than $4)
