ah portability

So i just bought a laptop today.

...
I don't have it yet, alas - maybe I'll get it Wednesday. And then the madness can begin.

It's pretty scary to have a transaction for that much money, but it's gotta be done once in a while. Also I bought a wool hat from Andy & Bax... I would have bought some new jump boots, but I balked at the (totally reasonable) price. I realize that if I had bought the boots, I wouldn't have been able to lay down plastic for the new white baby I'll be having in a few days. (14" iBook G3/600, pretty OK RAM, pretty OK hard drive which can, and probably will, be enhanced asap)

Oh boy, I get to name a new computer! What utter nerdity will I choose this time? (I won't ever forget you, Vir, my first silicon child. You were wonderful up till the end, when some unknown electronic assailant turned you into a doorstop.)

Now I just need an old iPod and I'll be only slightly behind the times.

Also, on impulse at the library, I picked up the CD of Come Into My Garden by the original multi-octave soul songstress, Minnie Riperton (some of you have been unfortunate enough to witness my religious devotion to her one hit single, "Loving You"). It's a hell of a great album that Stereolab has obviously carefully studied; the essence of psychadelic soul with a massive string section and mind-bending, complicated time signatures. Also, Minnie Riperton can make her voice sound like a theremin - take that, Mariah, you Pro-Tooled, insect-loving freak. I must acquire her other solo album (the one with "Loving You" on it) and I must listen to both heavily. And I'm sure I'll be alone - most folks are only going to hear cheesy not-quite-blaxploitation-soundtrack weirdness with a helium-voiced vocalist singing about flowers, and not get the chills of astonishment at its sublime beauty. That's OK; I'll take that and my Free Design records and go be by myself.

acquisition, geekery
