Title: Time Changes
Pairing: Dean/Castiel
Word Count: ~270
Rating: PG
Summary: Dean hopes things have changed for the better.
Prompt #1 in the A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words table from spn_30snapshots
Notes: My original thought was to have Dean and Castiel just driving through the country, through golden fields and beautiful blue skies.

And they are. Except the imagery didn’t actually make it into the story. Whoops?

It is different having Castiel sit by his side, instead of Sam.

It is better in some ways. Dean doesn’t have to worry about saying the wrong things or not saying the right things. Not that it had always been that way. But now, ever since Dean came back...

Now things are different.

Hell changed everything for them. It broke Dean and warped Sam.

Dean doesn’t like change. He doesn’t want things to be different. He wants things to go back to the way they were before Hell. Before he broke the first seal, before Sam broke the last one.

But Dean knows that can’t happen. It won’t happen.

Things can never go back to the way they were. Sam told him as much, even if Dean already knew deep down things needed to change.

But maybe it’s okay that things are different.

If different means having an angel sitting next to him. An angel that betrayed heaven to give Dean a chance to save the world.

An angel that is still by his side, even after Dean failed to save the world.

Dean glances over to look at Castiel, who is watching the scenery pass by. It still surprises Dean when Castiel sticks around longer than really necessary. More often now, he’s just there, providing silent company.

Dean knows that as the weeks continue go by, he’ll begin to expect Castiel to always be there. Just like he grew to always expect Sam to be there.

And just maybe, Dean thinks, he can deal with change if it means for once, someone won’t leave him.
