My father used this recipe to clean the huge plate-glass windows of our family business. It is comparable to Windex and has saved our family a small fortune over the years:
1 gallon hot water
1/2 cup ammonia
1/3 cup distilled white vinegar
2 Tbsp baking soda
The mixture doesn't have to stay hot to work properly, the hot water just helps the baking soda dissolve properly. Funnel it into a spray bottle and spritz it on anything that is gritty or greasy or otherwise gross, then mop it off with a rag. For maximum cheapass points, work out whether it is less expensive to buy a mister or a bottle of no-brand Windex. If the latter is cheaper, use that til it's used up and then re-fill it with your homemade cleanser for all time. It is can be surprisingly expensive to buy re-usable containers that are included in the price of purchase when you buy a product.
This stuff works great on:
- Glass
- Stainless steel
- Tile
- Porcelain
- Formica
This stuff will cause problems on:
- Varnish- it strips it in weird patches
- Fibreglass and some plastics- it will de-laminate them. Best to test on an inconspicuous area if you're not sure.
- Aluminum- ammonia will make it turn black
