Dedication?

This weekend, in lieu of Hillary's b-day trip to Wilmington, we're heading out to Memphis to hang out with a goodly portion of the Nobody gang. Yes, it's a 9 hour drive; that's why we don't do it every weekend. However, I had a friend mention that it takes dedication to drive that far just to hang out with your friends, which made me think...

Now, to me, it's not that bad. My family thrives on road trips, never really having been well off enough to spend money on airplane tickets. Hell, we've driven down along the West Coast and across the bottom of the U.S. just to see family, from Washington State to Florida three times. (One of these trips was there and back, so I guess technically that's *four* trips.) A trip from where we are now down to where my grandmother used to live used to be about seven hours, and we'd do that every couple of months. When I lived in Wilmington, I'd drive to Columbia and back once a month, and have made day trips to Atlanta, Charleston, and Wilmington from Columbia, though not at the same time. Three and four hour trips to another city to catch a cheaper flight haven't been unheard of for me, either; I even once drove at 1AM to Raleigh in order to catch a red-eye out to Texas to visit my man. So, to me, a nine hour drive isn't *that* big a deal, especially given the fact that one of my long-lost childhood friends will be showing up at some point, and I didn't get to see her at AWA this year.

But I can see it from the point of view of others; when I take a step back and think about it, yes, it *is* a long time to spend in a car. Of course, the alternative is not seeing said friends for months, maybe even a year at a time. If I could afford the time off from work, I'd probably drive out to Texas once or twice. That's me, though. I love the driving. XD
