CHARACTER

✧ NAME: Crow Hogan
✧ SERIES: Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's
✧ HISTORY: "This story is about the city and Satellite. About the legendary man who tried to free the Satellite."
(only relevant until the end of the Dark Signer Arc)
✧ TIMELINE: post Episode 64 | sometimes after completing the bridge between Neo Domino City and the Satellite
✧ PERSONALITY:

The first impression most would make of Crow, is that of a cheerful, loud and hotheaded young man, who likes to live on the edge and doesn't consider 'reckless' as part of his dictionary. Indeed, Crow can be terribly daring when the situation calls for it; he does not hesitate to travel out into the B.A.D. in order to challenge the Dark Signer, even after watching Yusei go down while fighting them.

However, Crow tends to be a far more calculating person than he lets on, fooling his opponents more than once either by challenging them out right or pretending to vulnerable - understating him is a mistake that is easily made and hard to come back from. While he never might have been one for higher education - having learned how to read, write, count and calculate through the Duel Monsters Card Game per own admission - he is still a rather smart guy, in and outside of duel. He knows the rules of the street - how to plan heists on secured locations, how to listen for chatter and knows exactly how to pick out valuable information.

Having spent the first few years of his life alone in one of the far more lawless areas of the Satellite, Crow has come to value the bonds of trust and friendship he has built over the years; especially to his childhood friends Jack and Yusei. They are his best friends, whom he will go to hell and back for if necessary.

The only people he possibly cares more for than his two friends - if more than mostly because they cannot defend themselves quite that easily - are the orphan children of Satellite. Knowing the despair of loneliness, Crow makes a point of picking up and taking care of lost and lonely children - they are innocent, they are the future after all. Threatening them, is about the quickest course to invoke his anger - he is not going to rest until the wrongs to them are avenged.

He is very protective of all those he considers his responsibility, friends and children alike, he practically considered it his duty to set out and deal with the Dark Signer after Yusei was hurt in his duel against Kiryu.

There are many persons with lot of impact on Crow and his believes, though most notable are probably Rex Godwin/The legendary D-Wheeler, Kiryu Kyosuke and Robert Pearson:

At presumably young age, the Legend of the Daedalus Bridge left quite an impression on Crow; after all the thought of actually escaping Satellite seems like an absolute impossibility to most of the island’s citizens. The legendary D-Wheeler is the first person to defy the system, to give the island hope and shows them the will to live through despair and anguish in order to meet the next day by starting to build a bridge towards the city and giving them a symbol to believe in.

Crow and his kids practically worship that man and his story, and that Crow seems to continue believe into the legend even after Rex shows his true colors, is a show of his stubbornness. The wings of Crow’s D-Wheel “Black Bird” are confirmed to be a tribute to the legend.

Then there is Kiryu. Kiryu is probably the first person at their age Crow and the other two meet, who has the courage to say: "Screw the city; we’ll do our own thing in the Satellite and we’ll have fun while we are at it." Another thought that seems utterly impossible and foreign, considering the common attitude of despair and apathy within the Satellite.

This is probably also why Crow is the first to leave: Kiryu betrays his trust the moment he tries to harm a kid; he is straying from the path that he has set for them, it just isn’t "fun" anymore and he can’t and won’t back up Kiryu's actions. Even so he can't entirely shake off loyality and friendship to him; he returns to help when Kiryu is cornered by Security, watches both his duels with Yusei and later helps out once again in Crash Town.

Lastly there is Robert Pearson. Appearing at a time, when Crow is down and aimless - Kiryu has changed into someone he can’t recognize as a leader, forcing him to leave Team Satisfaction and to question whether he could really create his own life in the Satellite (perhaps also if he really is fit to take care of the children) like Kiryu had said - Pearson is the one to help him regain his confidence by telling him to do what he has done until that point: "Take care of the children, teach them what you can and make sure to protect them and their smile to the best of your ability." After Pearson's death he makes that his main motivation - his very reason to live and fight. As long as he has his kids to protect, he will always get up, no matter how hard he was smacked down before.

✧ ABILITIES/POWERS:

Crow is a Signer, a chosen warrior of the Crimson Dragon, and sports "the Dragon's Tail mark" on his right forearm. The Signers as a whole have been shown to share a certain amount of abilities:

- A bubble shield forms around themselves and any non Signer close by to protect them when an Earthbound God is summoned or they are otherwise attacked and not participating in a duel. It also makes them immune to any sort of time or memory altering magic.

- Their mark activates when:

a. the Signer duel one another in a serious duel
b. the Crimson Dragon appears
c. one of the Signers is dueling a foe that carries ill will against the Signer and the Crimson Dragon. Usually they can also tell, which of their group is in trouble and tend to have at least some idea of their approximate location

Aside of that Crow doesn't have any sort of supernatural abilities, but he is certainly gifted in other ways. He is a Master Duelist, easily on par with Yusei and Jack, even before being chosen as Signer. He is also an experienced thief, who broke into Security warehouses on more than one occasion (and also has the criminal markers to show it) in order to steal cards for the children he had taken under his wing.

✧ TIME OF ARRIVAL: Day

✧ MASK DESIGN: "Crow the Bullet-sama has already fired!"
✧ PLACE OF SOLACE: Satellite | Daedalus Bridge and the surrounding docks

SAMPLES

✧ FIRST PERSON: "I always got the best timing."
✧ THIRD PERSON:

It wasn’t the same.

This bike that he was currently handling; as smooth as it turned around the corners and as much as it purred when he raced through the streets of the City for his deliveries, it still wasn’t the same. This bike that he had acquired and tuned to bring it to its fullest potential just wasn’t Black Bird.

It didn’t appear quite as sleek nor as elegant as his beloved bike; and of course it lacked the history - it never ever could be the same and if he was thinking rational about it, he knew that of course. But still, there was that ache for his proper bike, the one he had inherited from Pearson and modified further over the years.

And especially now, after the whole fiasco with Bolger, who - he still couldn’t believe it - had killed Pearson for reasons he still didn’t quite get, didn’t want to get, ever. He shook his head, concentrating on fastening the strap that would keep his cargo in place, perhaps just slightly tighter than he usually would have done. Moping about something he couldn’t change wasn’t very productive after all.

A moment later he swung his leg over the bike and raced out of the small garage, smiling the moment he felt the wind race along his skin, because - Black Bird, or not - the feeling moving and working sure as hell had a satisfying edge. And while he raced along the streets, navigating through the traffic - it was so much easier with a bike and he smirked slightly as he overtook the cars one by one. It had taken him a while to get used to this; the traffic for one, the way the tall skyscrapers around him (so many, far more than even Neo Domino had) made him feel small, almost like an insect. Not that he would ever admit having felt bothered by that.

Instead his thoughts returned to the bike; the speed wasn’t quite optimal just yet, he noted, but hey that’s why he watched Yusei and Bruno ever so often when they messed with the D-Wheels - that was the best way to learn a trick or two when it came to maintaining and tuning the thing. It shouldn’t be too hard to apply them to this bike, even if it was older and slightly different to a D-Wheel.

Soon enough he reached his first station, stuttering his way to the correct room with his less than meager English. Absently he took note of the strange look the secretary shot him - most likely because of all the markers, he thought. He shrugged it of, but even so he was glad when he was out of the building, stretching as he walked up to his bike.

Looking around, he smirked when he saw the Duel Monster commercial running on a flat screen that was fixated high above the masses on the building across the street. It was comforting to know that the card game that was a constant part of his life, had made its way to the City as well. He calculated for a moment, smiling when he concluded that he had enough made money to effort buying a few booster packs for the kids in the Day Care Center.

His smile widened when he thought about the faces they would make, the light and the happiness he would be able to witness once he brought the presents, the same one he had seen so often with his own children; seeing them happy made him feel content with himself as well.

Nodding to himself, Crow stretched one last time before jumping back on his bike. Those parcels wouldn’t be delivered by themselves after all.
