Smokey

So, I decided to make some Fry Bread (recipe from poor_skillz community, under cut before) to go with the leftovers in my fridge for dinner. It turned out GREAT (soooo yummy..... I want to eat it all), but while I was frying it up, some of the oil splattered onto the heating coil of the stove and created - viola - smoke! I turned on the hood fan above the stove right away, but as I have previously thought, it doesn't seem like it does ANYTHING. Now my apartment is in a lovely haze. I've opened all the windows and I've got my fan going as well as the hood fan, but it's hard to tell if it is making much of a difference. Bah. I'm just hoping the whole place & everything in it doesn't end up smelling like smoke forever. *sigh* At least I have some yummy fry bread to eat.

Fry Bread

3 C Flour
1 Tbls Baking Powder
1/2 tsp salt
1 C warm water

Mix all dry ingredients thoroughly with a fork. Add water slowly, mixing with a fork until mixture becomes too thick to stir, then knead the rest of the water in. Continue to knead the dough until it is soft, not sticky (note: sometimes you will need to add more flour or more water, it just depends. Just keep kneading!). Put dough in a bowl and cover, let sit for 15 minutes.
Pour about 1/4 inch of vegi oil into a high-sided skillet, heat to about a medium-high heat. Pull off a golf-ball sized piece of dough and flatten it with your hands (it's time to play in the dough!), making it 1/4 inch at the thinnest, 1/2 inch at the thickest. Poke with a fork a few times, then place in the oil. When "bubbles" appear in the top of the dough, flip over and cook the other side until golden brown. Continue to do this until all the dough is used up.

This made me about 8 pieces of bread. It goes great plain with soup or stews (or just eating plain, maybe with some butter), or you can have it as an easy dessert with cinnamon and sugar on top, or with honey. Really great, and really quick to make. And it makes your house smell really good. I use it when I know I'm not going to be able to get a full meal beacuse I'm low on cash, because the bread is really very filling. I'll make my "meal," and then make fry-bread to go with it so I'm not hungry. Then if I get hungry later I can just munch on another piece. It also can be a fun food to make with kids, letting them pull out the dough for the next peice of bread, while you're frying the current one.
