Spirits of the Heart: Chapter Seven
Still on a strike when it came to sleep, Kyuhyun waited impatiently for Heechul to come back after he left. He checked the time and stared at the pillow left in the chair. Kyuhyun shifted numerous times with a small huff. He regained his voice and no one had come to pay him a visit. He knew Heechul was coming. Kyuhyun even knew the exact minute to expect him. But that "then" didn't help this "now." Kyuhyun tried distracting himself with his DS, the television and the books that Heechul had brought, but none of it was happening. He wanted to talk. He also really wanted his laptop.
Kyuhyun perked up as he heard the small jiggling of the knob on his door before the soft click of the latch pulling back. Finally, Heechul came into the room and it looked like he brought some more things with him.
"No," Heechul said, misinterpreting Kyuhyun's look at him as that of wonder for his laptop. "I told you, I'm not bringing it." He crossed the room, letting the door fall shut behind him and set one of the bags down on the bedside tray. "I bought you some lunch. I know it's a little ea-"
"Thank you," Kyuhyun interrupted. Annoyance appeared briefly across Heechul's face, but it was quickly stifled with a more neutral expression. "You didn't make it, did you?"
"Ha ha, very funny," Heechul said with a roll of his eyes as he set the other bags down in the other chair. He pulled out the contents of the bag and opened the containers before wheeling it over to Kyuhyun. Heechul plopped down in his chair with his own container and started eating. "How are you today?"
"Fine," Kyuhyun replied nonchalantly as he began to dig in. Heechul made a small grunt of disapproval. Kyuhyun pretended not to hear, feeling heat rise up to his face. It was much easier to lie when he was still writing to speak.
"So that's just a lot of eyeliner you've got on?" Heechul asked. "I didn't really think that was your style, Kyuhyun." Kyuhyun pursed his lips a little and picked at his food for a moment before shoveling another bite. He didn't feel much like talking anymore. Heechul picked at his own food for a moment before simply setting the container down in his lap. "It's the dreams, isn't it?" Kyuhyun froze for only a second and continued to pretend as though he didn't hear Heechul, but it was enough for Heechul to know the answer. "I hate to be the one to say it, but they never really go away."
"I know that," Kyuhyun snapped, feeling his mood plummet and a desire for Heechul to have to leave early. Heechul seemed completely unfazed by the reaction, however and continued.
"They'll happen less frequently, but they'll always be there. And they'll always be much worse than what you went through. They won't bother you as much though as time goes on." Kyuhyun turned his gaze to Heechul with a question on the tip of his tongue. Heechul paused and waited for him to ask, but Kyuhyun held back. Even so, Heechul guessed what he would have asked. "They just piss me off now. It's like watching a rerun or something that you just saw not more than ten minutes ago on another channel." He said no more and went straight back to eating, his attention on his food. Kyuhyun stayed still, however, and watched him. Heechul felt the eyes on him and asked, "What? Were you expecting some kind of sage advice about it?" Kyuhyun couldn't hold back the smile.
"No," he said with a small laugh as he resumed eating his lunch. Kyuhyun stopped again as he realized that was the first time he had laughed since he woke up. He laughed a little again, the laughter slowly growing until he was in a helpless fit. Heechul stopped eating, raising a brow. He wondered just what was so funny, but he also wondered if maybe he made Kyuhyun snap unwittingly.
"Want to share with the class?" Heechul asked warily as tears began to stream down Kyuhyun's face. Kyuhyun shook his head furiously as he gripped his sides and tried to stop himself. It took several minutes before he could stop the laughter enough to breathe right.
"I...I don't know...what...what that...what that was," he gasped between smaller fits of laughter. And he truly had no idea what spurned it. He just felt something bubble up in him and the laughter just simply wouldn't stop. He let out a sigh of relief when it finally completely passed and wiped at his eyes, doing his best to finish his lunch.
Heechul finished the last few bites of his lunch before tossing the container in the trash. "Well, that makes me feel a little less crazy for buying these," he said as he began digging into one of the bags. "Give me the bear." Kyuhyun complied, more interested in his food now.
"He has a name."
"Whatever," Heechul said as he took the bear into his lap. Glancing at Kyuhyun, he turned away and blocked his view as he pulled out what he had bought. He was quick about it and turned back around. "Jjajan!" The little bear now donned a set of pajamas, a night cap, and even little bunny slippers. Kyuhyun's reaction wasn't anything that Heechul was looking for as his face scrunched up in confusion. Heechul didn't seem to lose heart though as he replaced the bear back by Kyuhyun's side. "It's not fair that you get nice pajamas and Neville-"
“Newton.”
"-has to lie around naked." Heechul crossed his legs and sat back in his chair. "So, I thought I'd get Norton-"
"Newton."
"-something nice to wear." Kyuhyun sighed a little.
"That was very thoughtful of you," he said, looking down at the bear.
"I know," Heechul said with a rather smug smile, folding his arms across his chest.
"Of course," he murmured as he inspected the pajamas and finally took note of the little cats were curled up on crescent moons and tiny stars all over the bear's pajamas.
"Hm?"
"Nothing," Kyuhyun said, turning back to finish off his lunch. "Thank you, Hyung. What else did you bring?" Kyuhyun nodded towards the other bag.
"Nothing for you," Heechul snorted. "Thank me in one breath and ask for more in the next..." Kyuhyun made a face and shook his head.
"Yeah, you're so abused."
"I am," Heechul huffed.
