Character: Urd
Series: Ah! My Goddess!
Version: Manga and anime - they don’t really conflict.
Age: Unknown, appears 26.
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Straight...usually.
Appearance: Urd exudes sensuality. She has long, elegant limbs and amazing curves that she likes to flaunt. Her skin is a dark, natural tan except for three blue triangle markings on her face: one on each cheek and a larger one on the center of her forehead. These mark her as a goddess; each goddess has their own unique markings.
Her dark purple eyes are almond shaped and guarded. She has white hair that trails well past her back, curling slightly at the ends and almost seems to float around her when she moves.
Urd, when not in her formal goddess clothes, likes to dress in flashy, fashionable outfits that show off her body to its advantage. One day she might wear a tight, short dress paired with a long white coat, the next day she might wear a midriff baring t-shirt and low-rise, baggy pants and suspenders. No matter what she wears, however, she always has complex earrings, a couple of rings and several silver bracelets, one of which has emotional significance.
Her goddess wear is just as sexy and elegant as her casual clothes: she wears a long purple dress with a plunging neckline down to her stomach, with a slit up one side to her thigh and off-the-shoulder collar sporting a gold and black triangle design. Paired with this is a long cape, black on the outside and magenta on the inside. She also wears long purple gloves with a similar triangle design at the edge and black and purple ankle boots. Around her neck is a simple black choker with silver edging.
She would rarely appear in the mortal world in this form; generally only when doing battle or any official goddess business.
Personality: Urd doesn’t act like a typical goddess. Reckless, brash and passionate, she doesn’t always think things through and can get caught up in the moment despite her wisdom and rank. Unlike her sisters, she often employs deception and trickery to get what she wants and has no moral quandary with lying to someone’s face. She also has a horrible temper when roused and reacts with explosive force...literally. She can be headstrong and impulsive, justifying the means to an end, but will often forget what the end is.
She enjoys meddling in people’s lives, considering herself somewhat of a Goddess of Love. While she means well (usually), it’s often the case that her unwitting victim would have been happier without her interference. She’s also very proud and open about her sexuality and not above using it to achieve a goal.
Still, despite many flaws, Urd’s been around the block a few times and is respected for her knowledge. She’s often put into the role of guiding big sister (and not only by her own biological sisters) - she’s the person people go to for advice and when it’s time to get serious, Urd can be depended on. She has a mysterious, almost ancient aura about her.
The aspect that sets Urd apart more than any other, though, is her mixed heritage. Half goddess, half demon, she’s always a bit uncertain of her place in the world. It could be argued that her casual indifference regarding many Goddess customs and her often comedic goofing off could be related to these inner insecurities. With both sides of her soul constantly in conflict within her, she thus relates and sympathizes with the “dark side” more than her colleagues would. And though she longs to be recognized as a goddess, she understands her demonic blood is part of what makes her who she is.
Abilities/Weaponry/Strengths: In the “Ah! My Goddess!” universe, goddesses are incredibly powerful beings who, unchecked and wild, could destroy whole worlds. This is in part related to their connection to the heavenly computer, Yggdrasil, which governs and maintains all reality in the universe. Because gods and goddesses are hardly infallible beings, a licensing system holds things in balance along with seals. To break any of the stringent rules of Heaven is to be punished by holy law.
Urd is a Goddess Second Class, Administration, Limited License. She is basically the Admin for Yggdrasil, guiding and managing the other “IT goddesses” who maintain the holy computer while troubleshooting if anything goes amiss. Unfortunately, she generally finds this task boring, since only rare scenarios would cause Yggdrasil to unbalance or get attacked. Thanks to this job, however, Urd is naturally gifted with electronics, finding mortal invention primitive in comparison to the technology of Heaven.
Urd is also arguably one of the most powerful goddesses in current existence. Because of her imperfect nature, though, she was delegated to Second Class and is limited in her ability to tap said phenomenal power. In recent history, she was given the chance to take the First Class Goddess exam to improve in rank, but though she passed, she turned it down, saying she didn’t have it in her to love and protect all things equally as a First Class Goddess should, putting her sisters first. Despite being only a Second Class Goddess, Urd’s power is still immense and she has several high powered abilities:
- World of Elegance - High ranking goddesses possess angels. These are separate beings from the goddesses who aid and improve their powers. Each angel is different in appearance and ability, reflecting the soul of the user. They live inside the Goddess, appearing when summoned, and are lifelong companions with the strongest bond.
Urd’s angel is called World of Elegance and is the only angel to have one white and one black wing, illustrating Urd’s mixed blood. She has scrolling black markings over pale white skin and sweeping, constantly flowing hair that is half black, half white. Like Urd, she seems sensual and mysterious. While Angels don’t talk, they can communicate perfectly with their goddess and can “talk” with the rare being particularly tuned to magic.
- Norn of the Past - Along with her two sisters, Urd governs a time realm. Her youngest sister represents the future, her younger sister represents the present and Urd represents the past. As such, going back in time is easy for Urd. If Yggdrasil is malfunctioning, she may get turned into a child (only in body).
- Altering Reality - Like all high powered goddesses, Urd can change reality slightly. This means, for example, that she can change a person’s appearance, summon sweaters off of people or repair collateral damage in a few seconds. Generally trivial things, unlike a First Class goddess’s powers.
- Mini Urd - Since she has so much power, Urd can split herself into many, mini versions of herself at one time. Essentially, she divides her power to be in more than one place at once. This is especially useful if she wants to spy on someone, even if they can sense power. She can divide herself up completely, or she can retain most of her power and just send off one or two Mini Urds.
- Elemental Magic - Urd uses lightening (and to a lesser extent, fire) magic when in battle. This can range from precise bolts to balls of explosive power to a focused cannon like shot capable of taking out whole cities. When angry, lightening crackles around her.
- Music - The gods and demons in “Ah! My Goddess!” will often use song to cast complex spell algorithms, as a form of magical shorthand. One has to be perfectly precise in pitch, timing and melody, though, or anything could go awry. Urd is a slightly above average songstress, singing in a sultry alto.
- Flying - All adult goddesses can fly, though many opt to use brooms for added speed and comfort. Urd does both when it suits her, though she sometimes likes the simple pleasures of walking. Because of the immense power within her, she will often float in one spot when another goddess would sit on a chair or stand. Gravity doesn’t really affect Urd unless she wants it to or she’s unconscious.
- Apothecary - Unrelated to her natural powers, Urd enjoys making potions and pills of varying uses, though usually focusing on love and sex. She has her own little mini lab full of flasks and chemical tools to make said “medicines,” usually from ingredients not found on Earth and mixed with some good old fashioned magic. While the products she creates sometimes work the way they’re supposed to, something always happens to make it all backfire.
Weaknesses: Urd is not invulnerable or immortal. She can be damaged by high powered attacks and affected by advanced spells, though it would take an amazing amount of power to kill her.
Whenever she hears polka music, Urd immediately falls asleep and will stay out until the music is gone.
Even though her angel, World of Elegance, boosts and amplifies her powers and is emotionally strengthening, if the angel was forcibly extracted (and it would take something likely not of this world for that to happen), Urd would shut down immediately. She wouldn’t be damaged physically, but having what is essentially a part of her soul removed would be so psychically damaging that she’d have to shut down to retain her sanity.
Urd’s temper and recklessness lands her in more trouble than anything else. She’s the type to start tossing off explosive fire spells surrounded by canisters of gas when enraged. She can’t really control herself when roused and often ends up doing more damage than her enemy would.
While most people would see Urd’s constant guzzling of sake as simple case of her being a lush, it’s actually how she recharges and regains her magical energy. Each goddess has a different way of doing so. Being deprived by her unique method over extended periods of time would not only lessen Urd’s power but also drain her physical energy as well.
Because of her demonic blood, Urd has the potential to be turned into a terrifying demon. She’s already been so twice in canon and each time, it took a combined effort and holy intervention to stop her before she not only destroyed the world, but herself. Certainly, it would take something extraordinary for her to become a demon, but it can be done.
History: Not much is known about Urd’s past before coming to Earth. There are glimpses of flashbacks and implications that she was born and raised to a young age in Niflheim (the Hell realm in the “Ah! My Goddess” universe) by her mother, Hild, the Daimakaichō (the head demon, so to speak). For whatever reason, she was handed over to the Almighty, Urd’s father and, as the name would imply, leader of Heaven. There she met her half-sister Belldandy, a kind, gentle and perfect goddess. Her youngest sister, Skuld, would be born later.
When she came to the age where she could possess her own angel, Urd was understandably nervous. Having seen Belldandy’s beautiful and pure angel, she desperately hoped her own angel would have white wings. When she swallowed the angel’s egg and World of Elegance appeared, her worst fears were confirmed: her angel was half divine and half demonic, just like her. Horrified, she commanded that the angel never come out again. It wasn’t until she was an adult that Urd finally overcame the doubt that plagued her and was able to summon World of Elegance again.
When Urd was an adult (but still prior to coming to Earth), she had a romance with the Spirit of the Plum Tree, Troubadour. Handsome and charming, he played the harp beautifully and was obsessed with music. Though they loved each other passionately (even exchanging gifts which both continue to hold on to), Troubadour put Urd second to his lifelong quest of finding the legendary Golden Nightingale and left her. Pride injured, heart broken, Urd was more than willing to let him go.
Urd’s life started to get really exciting when her sister, Belldandy, entered into a divine contract with the mortal human, Keiichi Morisato. Belldandy worked at the Goddess Relief Office, which grants wishes to those lucky enough to get through. When Keiichi accidentally dialed Belldandy’s division, she appeared before him and had him make a wish. Struck by her beauty, Keiichi blurted out that he wanted a goddess like her to stay with him forever. To everyone’s surprise, Yggdrasil accepted the contract and Keiichi got his wish.
Belldandy’s absence was notable to those in Heaven, especially to her sisters. Urd had been watching Keiichi and Belldandy’s shy courtship for awhile and, in typical fashion, decided to play Love Goddess to speed things along to a more steamy result. Through trickery and deception, she was able to mess with the hapless mortal long enough for Belldandy to notice. Unfortunately, she wasn’t the only aware of Urd’s crimes - as punishment for abandoning her work as Admin of Yggdrasil, the Almighty banished Urd to the 3rd Dimension (i.e. Earth) until further notice. This actually worked out pretty nicely for Urd, who wanted to watch over Belldandy anyway.
Many things happened afterward - Skuld appeared and was always fighting (as sisters do) with Urd and getting between Belldandy and Keiichi; the demon Marller made herself a hapless annoyance; Urd was turned into the Lord of Terror, possessed by a complex demonic code that repressed her goddess side and let her demon side run rampant; Urd was separated into two beings, one demonic and one divine; Belldandy’s mentor, Celestin, broke out from prison and used Keiichi and Belldandy to attempt to destroy Yggdrasil out of vengeance; and this is just to name some of the excitement. Through it all, however, Urd continued to “help” her sister and her human boyfriend in the love department, protect those she cared about and enjoy the fun of being surrounded by humans.
Once again, Urd was called back to Heaven for a trifling matter in system management. While traveling through dimensions, however, something went wrong and the goddess found herself outside the gates of Paixao instead of Heaven. Try as she might, she is unable to contact the Almighty or even anyone from her realm and Yggdrasil remains out of service to her.
