It seems like a lot of people are talking about the earthquakes and tsunamis that have been occuring lately. While I probably should say some words about it, I honestly I can't think of anything to say that hasn't already been said more that enough times already. I wouldn't mind doing something to assist those that are suffering, but, frankly, I don't know how I might help. Any ideas?
That aside, I suppose I should make a small report on what I've been up to. Not a whole lot, actually. I've been getting a little more practice with driving and I've got some college thing to go to tomorrow afternoon. I think its supposed to be an orientation...but as complicated as this has been...I'm not sure.
Other that, I've been watching a bit of the History Channel lately. Its more interesting than nearly any other channel I can think of. I've seen a few interesting programs lately.
One, for example, about humanity's apparent obsession with the impending apocalypse. It seems just about every different culture and religion has predicted different ends at different times. I find it a little depressing that so many people seem to eagerly await the end of the world, so much so that they predict and speculate about it. I half-expect them to cum in their pants if it ever does happen. For example, there was a little movement in America during the 19th century. The head of that movement predicted that Jesus Christ would return in 1845 or so. When Jesus didn't show, they recalculated and said Jesus was really coming in 1846 or so. Again, Jesus didn't show up at the party. The humor in that, I find, is that most of the people had sold all their possessions before gathering at the farm where they expected Jesus to arrive. I just fail to see the importance of knowing that the world will end in 10, 50, 100, or more years. Wouldn't knowing that the world is going to end so soon take all the enjoyment and flavor out of life? They discussed things like...the four riders of the apocalypse..White, Red, Black, and Pale rider. They mentioned the Rapture, which, apparently, was never mentioned in the Bible. I didn't know that it was actually made up by a thelogian a long while back.
I also saw a program about Hell and, yes, humanity's apparent obsession for it. I believe it discussed Hell and Satan/Lucifer and the different depictions of them. For example, Dante's Divine Comedy: The Inferno, seven levels of Hell, three-headed Satan gnawing on Casius, Brutus, and...damnit, the third person's name slips my mind at the moment...I think it might be Judas. They also mention Paradise Lost's depiction of Lucifer. I haven't read Paradise Lost, though I think I would like to sometime. Apparently Lucifer was more the defiant, charismatic angel. Almost a tragic hero, who's greatest flaw is his immense pride. They also went on how Hell and Satan have become more popular...you know, Devil worship and the like. It was pretty interesting, but I won't go into further detail.
I don't mean to insult the Christians with my topic. I don't hate Christianity, despite my disbelief. While I don't believe in Christianity as the actual, factual word of God, I think the mythology behind it is somewhat interesting. My interest in Christian mythology is along the same vein as that of ancient Greek or Norse mythology. Of course...my considering the same as ancient Greek or Norse mythology might be considered an insult.
Aside from that, today I saw two programs. One about the KKK and another about Nazism in America. They were kind of interesting. I still wonder exactly why people do and believe those sorts of things. Is it because of fear and hate? Is it a natural urge to oppress others? Is it the need to feel accepted by a group? I just can't understand why. The Neo-Nazi and KKK organizations gave excuses like...Jews were controling the world, blacks were going to corrupt the purity of the white race, etc. They apparently hated the Catholics too...although they didn't seem to give a reason why. I realize Hitler hated Catholics because Catholicism wasn't German and it would draw attention away from his teachings. Perhaps thats the reason. There was a bit of ranting "Down with the Jews! Hang the niggers! Kill the Catholics!", that sort of thing. Personally, I fail to see why people are so compelled to racial and religious hatred. I imagine its based in long-old fears, superstitions, and propaganda that has been handed down throung the generations of families. But thats probably just a small part of it all. Either way...I still don't know why people can do such strange things.
There's a program on now about Cults...I might go watch that now. Either that or I'll find something else to do.
That is all.
