Finally watched Rurouni Kenshin: Shin Kyoto Hen, which I now believe translates loosely from Japanese as "Rurouni Kenshin: Steaming Pile of Monkey Shit."

Lord, save us sinnful viewers of Americavalice.
I'll probably still see it, being who I am, but I consider myself now forewarned. Have you seen the RK live-action film? I reeeeeally want to get my hands on a copy of that - I hear it's actually fairly good (by what standards?), but I still wait with bated breath. Also, I have only one more volume to collect of the RK VizBig volumes, then it's time for a long-awaited reread.
Lately, I've been reading the Trigun manga for the first time, and while it has a lot of interesting ideas, I feel like it has trouble executing on those ideas in a coordinated way. That made me think of how much more organized RK is, as a story. As much as Watsuki likes to give every villain backstory flashback time, I actually appreciate that in light of Trigun's Gung-Ho Guns, who are just some craaaazy designs that show up to get in a fight. It gives me a greater appreciation for Watsuki's craft. Alas, that his latter-day manga were as compelling~

Lisa gave the film her thumbs-up, which is extremely encouraging. However, between this OAV and Seisouhen, it's as if the people who get their hands on RK don't ever trust the source material to be sincere; they always have to "darken" or "grit it up" with the subtlety of a tuba player trying to blow a stuck pig from the bell of his horn. This would be only mildly annoying if it didn't fuck up some originally memorable characterization in the process. What Seisouhen did to Enishi's character, Shin Kyoto Hen does to Shishio's.
What I wouldn't give for an Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood-style retelling of Ruroken with Watsuki at the helm.
