if you can really go for $1200, I would say avoid windows altogether and get a mac.

Other than that, all of the new laptops you'll find anywhere are going to have vista. Sadly. You CAN run two operating systems...but it's tricky and with only 512 ram...that wouldn't really be advised.

Try to get as much ram as possible from the get-go for a laptop, as it's...well, INTERESTING to try and upgrade it. Also, 60 gig hd would be recommended (especially with what you'll be using it for).

Since you're doing graphic design, I'd still recommend a mac (and they have the camera built in).

There's a Apple store down here at International mall if you want me to go with you.

I'm no expert with computers, but I just wanted to give you a heads up that HP has horrible customer service. When you ask the tech for help, they don't know anything and are sometimes down right rude. They had me send my laptop back for repairs and shipped it back to me saying it was fixed. Two days later, the stupid thing was broken again. I called tech support again and they said that nothing should be wrong with it but to just send it back again. I was so annoyed, I just returned it back to the store I got it from. I got an email like 5 months later saying that the model I had bought had some software problems and needed to be recalled. o_O
Needless to say, I'm never buying a HP laptop again.
A friend of mine has a Fujitsu and she says it works great. Supposedly, it has pretty good battery life compared to other similar models.

Sorry about the long ramble, maybe it will be helpful. ^^

hmmm, I think geting 40 GB up is a must, because I haven't seen any laptop with smaller hard disc, especially that new ones have like 120 GB, and only those usually have web cams.

I have COMPAQ, I'm not sure but it seems this company belongs to HP. I like my notebook, though it get really hot so I need an extra cooler, and it's quite heavy. but the hardware, I don't complain:)

You can get a great laptop for that price range. If you are willing to buy online you can still buy systems that have XP installed. I would stay away from Vista if I could, at least until Microsoft comes out with a Service Pack 1. (They had to do two with XP so it happens with all of their OS)

You can get a laptop to dual-boot either XP or Vista but that would involve creating partitions on your hard drive and loading both OS, loading a program such as BootCamp, etc. I wouldn't recommend it unless you are willing to tinker around ( ... )
